  • Anyone Doing Digital Microscopy ?

    Greetings All !

About a year ago I started fooling around with digital microscopy ... is anyone else in ZeoVille doing this kind of photography, or anything similar? I have some questions about what I need for my computer to do "good" video capturing, editing ... and what is the best way to extract photos from video.

    TIA!

    BTW, that's a Harpacaticoid copepod ...

    Thanks Again!

That is extremely nice and I have wanted to get myself a scope too. Saltwater tanks arent just about fish and corals!

                Publishing ... ...

WOW that's a seriously cool toy!
Totally ... but I bet Dr. Walters and JakStat play with WAY cooler toys.

... are those your tanks in the background
Nope ... although I consider them "mine." They're the tanks of the LFS where I work. As some of you might imagine, people don't quite know what to make of the "crazy staff biologist" when I start showing them live images of marine microflora and microfauna ...

                ... hehe ... ... ... ...

... Saltwater tanks arent just about fish and corals!
How very true ... It's more than a little bizzare to me that after 29 years of keeping saltwater fish systems and 21 years of reefkeeping, my major interests have shifted to marine creatures that require microscopes and serious zoom lenses to see clearly with any detail ... Life is strange. How could I have ever predicted that one day I'd be virtually obssessed with the bacterioplankton and zooplankton that influence the growth and photosynthetic pigmentation of dinoflagellates embedded in Anthozoan tissue layers ...

                ... go figure ...

very cool stuff, I'd love some of that gear but unfortunately I have more than enough toys and not enough time already

anyway, are you using a DV cam ? if so then you need an IEEE-1394 interface card (ie firewire), a fast hard disk (ie SATA, 7200rpm and 8mb cache at least), and you're almost set...

this is a pretty good tool for transfering from a DV cam:

                  http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html

It can also take still images from video, and de-interlace them for you.. otherwise you need something like photoshop to de-interlace the stills.

you can also use Premier to capture DV but it's way to complex for such a simple task, it also has a steep learning curve for simple editing w/transitions and titles. you are better to look at something simple like Microsoft's MovieMaker.. it's free with WinXP..

                          Greetings All !

Skeletor ... Many Thanks for the tech info!

love to see pics of them
Careful what you ask for ...

This is an old pic from about a year ago ... before I learned how to focus a camera. Its changed somewhat since then ... one of the nice things about doing the display tanks at an LFS is that I get to add/remove specimens on a whim ... when the really cool specimens arrive, into the display they go!

I'll see if I can dig up better pics and post them in the Picture forum ... Thanks everyone for all the comments!
