  • My 120G non zeovit tank

Though I've been a member of this forum for the past few months, I'm not a zeovit user. I hope to learn from you guys about the wonderful reef and husbandry of our own aquarium. Here is a pic of my BB tank after converted from DSB 2 1/2 months ago.

please give me your truthful comments, be it good or bad, cos I'm still learning and striving to archieve as close as a zeovit tank.

Here is my full tank shot.

Hi Hamannbmw, good start & I luv your reef Just continue on your pathway, as the coral grow-out, it will become a real gem. If color & growth become weak, then that's where ZEOvit will make the difference, Bob

          Hi Bob,
thank for yr kind words. However, I have notice 3 bleach corals in my tank, namely 1. Soli 3/4 from surface 2. Encrusting Monti 1/2 from surface 3. green/yellow stag 1/2 from surface. I had jus upgraded my lights to 3 X 250W SE DIY lumenarc reflectors 6 weeks ago, photo period is 7 hours each. I had since cut it to 6 each. Hope the bleaching will stop. (BTW I'm using 2 X 250W 10K DE with normal reflectors in my tank prior to the change.)

Heard from some reefers that the best way to prevent bleaching is to place the MH higher than b4 (Its currently 8-9 inches above water surface from end of reflector)
than shortening the photoperiod. Any advise ?

          Hi Losmandy,
thanks for helping me on that, appreciate it. It does looks better than b4. How I judge ? Simple, from my purple with blue polyps humilis :p

          Hi Invincible,

Though I'm facinated with hamann's products, I went for "ATP" 18" 2 piece rims instead, even my kits is not hamann haha... its AC Schnitzer lol...

            Hi Simon,

I was judging from your pink millepora as well.
In fact most of the sps which has darker issues and those that are previously brown has lighten up. You tank now has the "cleaner" look compared to before.

Looking good and keep us posted.

Hi Simon, just to be sure, are your bleached corals a occurence after adding more MH lighting? Can you also mention your parameter levels? Thnx. Bob

Hi Simon, raising the lights should correct the bleaching problem. Your parameters appear fine, Bob

Hi Bob, is there a difference between " raising the light " and shorten the " photo period" ?, From my understanding is " a certain photoperiod is required to achieve coral colouration " eg. 7 hours.

Though bleaching occurs, I should not shorten my lighting period instead I should lift up my MH higher than surface and run longer ?

So, can u advise on this.

Hi Simon, I run my MH's 8 hrs/day. When I replace the MH's, I only raise the lights for a few weeks, then begin to lower them again. I've never had a problem using this technique. Bob

                            Thanks Bob,

Will raise another 2 inches off the surface.
