  • New ZEO/Holding tank

Hello fellow ZEOheads. You may have noticed from my profile on RC that I have had a tank in construction for months. Well, I am finally able to get the ball rolling again. In the meantime, I just built a small crappy stand for a 24"x24"x12 holding tank. I am not going to put any live rock in it and just use ZEOvit as the filtration method. I am currently filling the tank with water right now. Thomas Pohl says you don't need any live rock and it makes sense to me. I will have about 30 gallons of SW, a skimmer and a couple power heads and some frags. I will give frequent updates/pics about what i'm seeing and how the corals respond. I will start posting pics later tonight. If/when there is a more appropriate place for this thread then we will move it at that point.

Well, well, well, Madison, it will be nice to see pics of a tank of yours, finally...!

I think it'll be interesting to see the effects of having no LR in this tank... I can imagine it will be just fine, as Pohl mentions...

As you know, I have never been able to get zero nitrates in my tank, and I keep expecting for the anerobic bacteria deep within my LR to kick in and help to lower my N03 to undetecable levels, but....?!

    Keep us posted...!

Looks good Madison, do you know how you will elevate corals (stands). I'm setting up new tank today and will be removing rock to "cook" it. Do you know how you will elevate the corals? I'm thinking maybe eggcrate w/ somekind of pvc pipe legs maybe? Would be interesting to hear what you are thinking along these lines. Whatever you do could you post a pic?
            Thanks,
            Chad

Welcome, Chad, glad to have you here....
Bob and Alexander used some kind of acrylic platforms with rods as a base for their rock....

Gary are you able to see the picture?

Chad, I may do nothing at all. I might just dump the corals in and leave them be. If I do make something for them to sit on I would probably use eggcrate elevated with either acrylic rod (very cheap stuff) or pvc.

One more bucket of water to go and it should be full. The stand hasn't collapsed yet so that's a good thing. I'll probably add a little more support to it just to be sure.

Hey guys, from my experience, when making frag racks, I originally used those locking zip ties to hold on PVC legs onto eggcrate, but I acutally had the zip ties become brittle and break over a year's time (from the UV light in the halides I think, combined with SW)... I would recommned attaching the legs with silicon. It looks a little neater too...

Just for fun here's a pic w/ water and some small PC lights. The lights are really only acting as a heater right now because I don't have a spare heater .

Here is also a demonstration of what the "white balance does" (for you Gary) If you notice the aquarium light is somewhat white and the background has a lot more of the red spectrum in it. Because the whitebalance was adjusted for the tank light, the light from the flash is much warmer (more red) and you can see the difference in the two. If I hadn't used the flash these two would be a lot closer to each other. Or if I was using flash only then it would also come out white because the camera is set to make that light the white reference.

Per Gary's request I plan to do an online demo of aquarium photography but I will wait until I start putting corals in this so we can see the difference in the different settings.

I think I need to make more saltwater

I've decided to hook up the GroTech HEA 250 protein skimmer. This is way way way oversized for this small holding tank but it will still be fun to play with. This skimmer is 29" tall and has a 10" diameter. The recirc pump is an Eheim 1260 venturi. Unfortunately I don't have the fittings I need to get it running tonight so i'll have to plumb it tomorrow. I also have to build another stand for it

Is there such a thing as overskimming
