its the bone.. if you touch it.. you wil feel the flesh.. then under the flesh, you will see the bone. for your coral, the bone is what makes the round circle. The bone on this micromussa is beaded (texture)

I would say Micro... but micros dont have fleshy skin like the pic you posted.
