  • Funny: Knobody is ripping this thread apart for not knowing whats in it...

Def seems to me they are against the bacterial driven zeovit system. Knowbody seems to know whats in this product either and they are not jumping on Joe for being so crazy as to try something that he has gotten good results with.

    Quote:
It's a product called Special Blend by a company called Ecological Laboratories Inc. They started making a product called MICROBE-LIFT for use in ponds and water waste treatment. It's seems to be a bacteria that out competes other algae for nutrients. They look to have been around for about 20 years. I spoke to them on the phone, I guess what they do is a trade secret. Very nice people but all they would tell me is the product does just that. Cleans up your water quality by adding bacteria to the water. Special Blend is a variant of their Microbe-lift product that was formulated for use in marine tanks.

The trade secret part is what gets me. Seems to sound very similiar to Thomas Pohls thoughs about sharing his secrets. Yet we are crazy maniacs for using something that does not list whats in the ingredients. Even though the results we achieve shows there is merit to our madness.

Zeo is bacteria driven also correct?

Things like this are what piss me off. :shoot7:

Please mods leave this on as I am not bashing anyone or anything. I am just putting this out here to hear what others have to say aswell.

Jeff, when one's on the cutting edge, it's sharp, so one can't be too upset if the "old methodologists try to dull the edge. It will be the same with the new Reefer's Salt by Korallen-Zucht, in fact, I just can't scratch my itch quickly enough, Diamond-edged blade anyone Bob

I hear you Jeff, I think a lot of it has to do with who started the thread

Sad, but most of the blame can be placed on the Tonka. He doesn't have any cold corona to share, why would anyone support his methods?!

Also consider a couple of things Jeff, this product has 20 years of experience, ZEO does. This product requires you to add 1 thing, ZEO adds in 10 things if you wanted. That's what scares people, the amount of chemicals we add to our tanks on behalf of ZEO without knowing what any of them are. It's not that it's a bacterial driven system, it's the unknown aspect and the amount of the unknown we use.

This product mentioned requires additions every 2 weeks and makes no changes to color, just algae control. ZEO requires a reactor, daily additions and extreme changes to color. If you can't see why people accept this method over ZEO I don't know what to tell you. There is less involvment and less extreme changes.

Sean, I have to disagree with you on this one. The MAJOR factor the RC crowd has against zeo is not knowing whats in it.. This is exactly the same thing.. I agree with Matt "Tonka" that its because Joe posted it is why its civil..... Another thing to consider is the very SMALL amts we add. Joe is adding 70ml every 2 weeks.. With all my products I add I add less then 70ml every 2 weeks... 50ml of that being Macro elements. I add less then 20ml of all other products every 2 weeks..

Well at least one poster on that thread stated that the majority of "special blend" is just "standard" ammonia and nitrite converting bacteria, so the "secret ingredients" of special blend may not be so "secret" after all. However, that being said, it also doesn't seem to have drawn all that much interest either which may be the actual reason why there are no flames being posted. I mean, there were like 2, 3 posts really pertinant to the subject and the rest are "fluff".

What Sean doesn't know is that I have replaced the broken fridge and the Coronas are chilling as I type - he's just jealous that he can't say the same.

Seriously though, I think the major reason why that thread is accepted and Zeo isn't has to do with the reputation of Joe. Don't get me wrong, I respect the h3ll out of him and have always admired his set up (his is one of my favorites). But I think a lot of this might have to do with the old school way of thinking - salt water is hard, salt with coral is harder, and a successful SPS is for experts only. Along comes Zeo, enhanced growth, coloration, etc... granted, husbandry is still critical. I think a lot of people have a hard time accepting that by using Zeo, you can obtain a suscessful SPS that is supposed to be reserved for experts in the hobby.

Just face it Jeff Zeo will never be excepted mainstream and will always go against the grain. Im the only person in my reef club that has used Zeo and I used to here it from a bunch of diff people. Since having a bunch of problems(non Zeo related) more due to my tank move, and losing a ton of coral frags I quit using it for now I will probably start again in the future. I cant say for sure but my past results speak for themselves

I heard a quote the other day I just love-

"If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too damn much space"

                  Seems appropriate.
