  • My computer has major probs...

OK, I log on to my username on my windows xp computer and and I click on the little internet sign and nothing happens, so I log off, turn the computer off, and try again. I must have done this 15+ times untill I finally was able to log on by logging into the antivirus updates "button" and clicking updates on the web. Then I went here. I used to be able to get on the internet immediately when I logged on, now It takes loooong time. I think I have a virusus or something. Everytime I log on and do the Adware virus scan it comes up with 20 threats min. every time. And so I delete them. Is this normal? I dont know what the heck is going on.

I'm using the MS Anti-Spyware Beta... so far so good. You can download from the MS WS.

microsoft... and yes it is free. Don't have a link for sure but I'd put my money on just adding the adding a dot com to it.

My understanding of this MS spyware blocker is that under it all is a program from another company the MS bought out so it is MS, but it didn't start out that way.

Some of the default setting are of course aimed at keeping you under the MS umbrella.

It's not without faults though. When searching for a better on-the-fly trnaslator last week I was pretty deep in the results, maybe 4-5 pages when I clicked on a link I could here my CPU screaming. It ending up adding at least 200 Favorites, half of course porn sites. I ran the scan in it and Norton and though both found problems, after a re-boot the stuff was still there. Thank goodness for "System Restore", that solved it.

I will have to check it out - I really hate it when all that stuff happens!!! I just recently got rid of the dreaded aboutblank.htm - I ended up formatting and reinstalling the OS - I had to upgrade to XP pro so it wasn't that big of a deal.

The last episode was when a hijack program hijacked my desktop... with of all things... an all red desktop with only three of my desktop icons in place and in the center of all this red has a hot linked ad for a $49.95 Spyware program. "Give us your money and you can have your desktop back" sort of thing.

Yeah I've had that happen. MS's program can do on the fly protection and prevent the installation of anything.

Also try "Hijackthis" but it's for advanced users. It allows you to show all the software running etc and copy and paste it to a form for experts. HOWEVER, it also gives you a more indepth look at your processes and start up. I've found little tiny spyware hidden and been able to kill them.
