By now,
I don't want to try anything new.
As some might have read in the TOTM thread, I upgraded from a Schuran Jetskim 150 skimmer to a BK 200 intern. This skimmer pulls SO much more out of the water that some of the corals become in serious trouble:
- Two purple humilis (Wild Fiji, had them for about 2 years): rtn/stn
- One bluetip formosa (wild Indo, had it for about 6 years): rtn/stn
- One brownish A. jacquelinae (wild indo, had it for some months): tissue problems
- One blueish formosa (wild Indo, had it for about 6 years): rtn/stn
The good thing is that I made frags from all these corals, but the bad thing is I had to shred some very nice colonies to be able to have some leftovers which were still 'ok'.
Yesterday a fellow reefer was here, luckily he found that the other corals are still looking OK. Nice to have a second opinion
Now, I add ammonium chloride (as a food for the zoox), I add more food and the BK is on a timer so it won't be on 24/7. Still, no detectable phosphates or nitrates.
I'm very afraid to do anything which may cause just a little bit of stress to the corals. So, if I'll try the zeo method, I'll wait for quite some time till the tank is more stable.

Hi Tanne, I can't even imagine your disappointment in losing your long-lived coralsYour corrections are perfect for the rest. The B-K is very powerful skimmer, so in the future, it will enable you to carry a higher bioload, if you desire or feed your fish more often. Both of which is a nice comment to that skimmer. I also recommend not changing much else for a time, until you're comfortable with the status of your reef. Thnx. for your report & keep us updated. Bob

I think I remember a post from Bomber (when he was slamming Zeo) that mentioned lowering nutrients too fast was not a cause for RTN or STN. I think their theory is that something, within Zeo, was added to the tank that caused the RTN.
Maybe it's not the skimmer performance that is the problem but maybe the skimmer itself had some sort of residue that was on the skimmer and then made it's way into the water.

Thanx
I didn't change any other things apart from the skimmer-switch. I tested for calcium, magnesium, KH, nitrates and phosphates. All levels were ok. Salinity is 1.025, temp is 26 deg. Celcius.
Would it be wise to run some carbon?
I do not think there are any residues on the skimmer: I haven't heard of anybody else with these problems. And I've glued hard pvc quite some times, waited 5 minutes for the glue to dry and run the construction! Never had problems with that.

Sometimes I DO run carbon, but I'm not sure whether it will help now or not.
Apart from the increased feeding, addition of ammonium chloride and skimmer on a timer... Is there more I could do? If the damage would stay as it is now, I just have to accept it. I would go crazy if things would get worse
