  • Hrmmm... "Great Stuff" Background???

I was browzing RC and came across the post about creating fake backgrounds with "great stuff" foam. I saw some pics, they looked amazing. I really really am getting into this idea......but my 130 and 75 gallon are already set up!! what am I to do??? I cant break down my 130....I might get a 24x24x24 cube made and set it up inline with my 130 with this new "great stuff" foam idea. I am thinking about first putting the great stuff foam down, then throwing a few medium rocks or some small rocks in, then throwing some coral sand on top to cover the foam more. I have seen these tanks on RC...amazing. Even with the yellow foam only...only...they still look WAY better then a stupid black background!! Darn this seems awesome...I donk know If I should break down my 75 to do the foam thing in it...but it looks so darn natural!!

has anyone here done this to their tank???

If so you gotta post some pics...

I'd be worried about chemicals leaking or the effects of MHs on the foam.

I just don't trust stuff like that in my tank.

1.UV breaks it down. It starts to turn into dust. Heat speeds this.
2.It's very porous. That's one reason alot of public aquariums won't use it...it can retain bacteria/disease. It also allows it to retain useful bacteria.
3.It's very flexible when wet. Sorta like really stiffly whipped cream. It expands but can be 'smooshed' down and formed with a tool/hand.
                  4.It holds crushed coral well.
5.Aquatic Eco sells it. Make sure you get enough.

Most important: It's boyant and it's adhesive properties fade quickly. It needs to be physically anchored to your aquarium.

                    Greetings All !

I just don't trust stuff like that in my tank.
I'm right there with you, but ... you can achieve some stunning aquascape geometry with this stuff. I've fooled around with it a little, but found that there are indeed long term adhesion issues, and that the foaming/expansion produced some undesired aesthetic issues ... interesting stuff though.

It needs to be physically anchored to your aquarium.
                    YES ...

Madison and I were talking about another similar product marketed by GroTech (?!). I'll ask about it next time I see him.

yeah I wouldn't trust that stuff in my tank....Think about your fish if they started to pick at it that could turn into blocked digestive system really fast.
