  • Low Mg cause tissue resession?

Guys I think I found my problem. First I thought it was zeo, now I find that my Mg is extremely low. I thought my Oceanic salt was taking care of it but you know what assuming does . My mg is at 1140(ouch). does this cause STN? My guess is yes, but I need some reinforcement. Due to Zeo increasing calcification, my mg is depleted. Thcrazy thing is that I did a water change yesterday

I still have to dose mag. calc. and alk. and I use Oceanic, it just can't keep up with my corals. Sorry I don't know about the STN situation and mag. I use Seachems Mag. to keep my levels up (the granular kind) and it works very well. My levels as of yesterday were 1365.

I will be using Epsom salts to get it up but then will use ESV to keep it stable. its the only thing thats off and my guess has been off for a while because I noticed that my growth has pretty much stopped for the last few weeks I should have known

Sean, your instincts are correct, as low KH,& Ca or a very low Mg, result in tissue loss Bob

Do you also have blisters on your corals? or just RTN? I remember I had this problem and when I brought Mg to 1300+, everything started to health up and take off.

Not really blisters, more of tissue loss. Its driving me crazy though:cursin:

Yeah, I had a bout of low kh previously and the tissue started to stn from the base. Boost it up to 8 and the sps started to take off again. Now , I regularly test for KH and MG as these levels will more or less indicate if the the rest of the parameters are in line. Good indication for levels is also the daily ph swing. If its a constant swing on a daily basis then most likely than not, the KH is ok. hth

Farish my KH is fine I have to add bionic 2x's a day for that, Ca is good but my Mg was way out of whack. I will be holding back on start until they start to get better, but will dose bac food and AA. Hopefully everything comes back fully

Check your salinity and calibrate your tester too!

Thanks Edward that was the first thing I did because I wanted to make sure that it was not the salinity throwing the Mg off. Salinity was 1.024. after I recalibrated my refractometer

Sean, do you run a Ca rx?

No but I will be building one soon as my Ca demand becomes too much for H2o changes and bionic. Im also sick of testing my water 2x's a day

Sean, I personally feel the stabilty with a Ca rx is utmost importance for maintaing stable conditions for sps to fluorish.. I know many people that do it the old fashion way but I myself have really seen a difference since going with a Rx myself.. The reason I ask is because I run the growtech Mg granulate in my Ca rx at 10-15% ratio.. My Mg is very stable at 1400-1450. Sometimes it jumps up to 1500 after fresh water changes with ocieanic. I am going to try TM pro reef next time around to see if I can get the Mg lever more stable around 1350-1400.. I will also make sure in My Rx next time to only use about 10%.. My Rx is rated for 600 gallons and I have 200 gallon total water volume, I think thats why with the 10-15 my Mg level stays high.. I do do 10% weekly WC though.. i have been thinking of cutting back to 5%... If I stayed with oceanic I would for sure but if I get better #'s with TMPR salt I might still do 10% weekly...

Peace and good luck.. Stay the course as prescribed and everything will come back inline for you.. I know it can be frustrating but keep the head up...
