  • Big problem

I have been using the zeovit system since March, with sponge power 3 times a week, zeobak 2 times a week, zeostart3 2 times a day, biomate 2 times a week and flatworm stop 2 times a week and zeolites that I move twice a day An acropora carduu, the largest in the aquarium, lost its color two days ago and started to suffer stn, it still has polyp. All my parameters are stable. Any recommendation? Another large acropora has also lost color, all other corals are perfectly with good polyp extension

Are your other corals doing fine showing no signs of color loose ? Please also post your actual water levels including PO4 and NO3. Basically it can have many reasons like:
    • wrong carbon brand
    • low potassium
    • high KH
    • aggressive skimming
    • high / low salinity
    • test / instrument failure
    • to much ZeoVit or to high reactor flow

to just name some which I would first try to rule out.

Actually, some corals I see better than ever and others with loss of color and polyp extension, I only have stn in the acropora carduu but I'm afraid that it will go to more or it will happen to me in the other acroporas. I have recently changed the zeolites but the flow rate remains the same because the skimmer is automatic. My parameters today are
      Kh 9
      No3 5
      Po4 0.04
      Mg 1350
      Ca 460
      Potasium 380
      Salinity 1027
The only strange thing that I have noticed is that my kh consumption has dropped by half, I use balling
      Thanks Alexander

Thank you for the additional information. The KH is to high, let it slowly drop to the range of 7 – 7.5 if you are sure your test kit does give you the right reading. Please also cross check salinity with a different, accurate instrument as Mg and Ca are elevated additional to make sure the salinity is no to high. To help your corals you can reduce the ZeoVit reactor flow to ~ 50% for some time but keep a close eye on the PO4 an NO3 level both should not increase.

Which kind of carbon and which skimmer do you use and what is the net water volume of the complete system ?

The kh I have been able to measure with another test and it is totally correct, the salinity I have not yet been able to compare. The reactor works at 300 liters per hour, it cannot be lowered because it works in a cascade. My aquarium is 300 liters. I use zeovit carbon l and the skimmer is vertex 200, very large for my liters, but I have had it foaming dry for 2 years.

If you do not have a chance to reduce the reactor flow you can alternatively temporary take 50% of the material out of the reactor placing it in a mash bag in the sump. The symptoms you have described does remember me to a lower K+ concentration but the level seems to be ok. If you have a chance I would also double check the K+ level with a different test kit.

Additional doing three water changes each 10 – 15% within the next 10 days will be helpful also to refresh elements in a balanced way but before doing this I would recommend to cross check salinity with a different accurate instrument.

He was able to check the salinity and it is correct. I'll check the potassium later. I have sent a water analysis, I hope in the next few days to have the result. I will change water because I can't find where the problem really is. My corals are the same but they hardly consume kh
              Thanks Alexander

Sounds good lets see what the ICP test result does show when you have it.

I already have my icp but I don't see it very clear, especially in salinity because I make changes with sea water and it is at 1028 and here it gives me 1025. Everything comes out more or less normal. I don't understand then why my corals can be like this. I have lowered the kh and it seems that they are improving day by day. He also added a little amino acids 2 days a week. I don't know if you see something that could change
                  Thanks Alexander

If you do not have issues with cyanos you can dose 1 drops amino acid / 100 liters every other day for the next 10 days. Not sure about the salinity, do you use a hydrometer to measure it ?

I do not have cyano, I use a refractrometer for salinity but I have checked it with one of the hanna digital brand and it works perfectly

Lets see if corals do continue to recover after you have decreased the KH, dosing some AminoAcid additional will be fine also.

Shouldn't it feed the corals somehow? Just the light will be enough? Thanks Alexander

Corals are doing extreme well even if PO4 and NO3 is not detectable however if you like to you can 2 drops CoralVitalizer / 100 liters and 1 drop AminoAcid / 100 liters 2 x weekly additional.
