  • Zeo with uv sterilizer

This has probably been addressed a thousand times but just curious if any new info is available. Running UV sterilizer with full zeovit? Is it really a bad thing? I’m thinking about going full zeovit again but worried about cyano or dinoflagellates. I have found that with my current refugium based method a uv sterilizer will rid the tank of dinos. I’m also completely cyano free. Wondering if anyone has used a sterilizer just intermittently to take care of dinos if needed or would this cause too much of a disturbance with the zeobak bacteria.

I think tank should not have cyano and dino in a sound situation. The Zeovit system should not be related to them, maybe they are caused by other reasons and conditions. Zeovit systems generally do not recommend the use of UV germicidal lamps, which may affect bacteria (I'm not sure), but also seem to affect biology. If it is necessary to use UV germicidal lamps, it is generally recommended to use a spaced method rather than a continuous implementation. Remember also that ZeoVit is a bacterial system.

In a “perfect” system, cyano shouldn’t occur, but it still does. Dinos thrive in nutrient poor conditions. I’ve never used uv with a bacterial driven system. I’m asking if anyone else has and if it affected their bacterial driven system.

The UV same as Ozone does destroy several elements contained in the bottles while they are in the water column. If you like to give it a try I would recommend to switch off the UV for about 2 hours while dosing.

Thank you. I do not intend on using uv permanently nor do I currently use it daily in my current system. What I have found, especially with a newer system, is that UV will help rid the tank of dinos. I feel that I have this in my arsenal as a last ditch effort it is definitely worth using it.

Looks like you're experiencing dino issues, is it OK?

Currently I am not, but I have when my PO4 and NO3 were too low for too long. I had to dose Potassium nitrate and phosphate to bring it up with use of a uv sterilizer to get rid of them. This is my current system though which is refugium based, however I have had dinos while using full zeovit and I ultimately had to shut down the tank.

Maybe take some water and pass the ICP detection method, this may be good

I did a couple of Icp tests. Nothing was abnormal.

Is there any chance to fill in the basic information of tank, and attach the picture of the main display system and sump, not sure about the source of the dino problem, not sure if I can help, but we can discuss together

Here you can find the questions to the basic tank information Jacky has asked for:

Again, that was an old system that is no longer running.
