  • Can't get rid of this damn brown algae

I have been trying to get rid of this brown algae in my tank now for about 1 month without success.

I just changed my zeoliths, my water reads at 0ppm and all parameters are great.

I don't think it is cyano because it dosen't have that red tint to it. It is on the sand and my rocks. One day I brush it off with my hand and the next day it is back in full force. I will try to provide a picture either tonight or tommorrow. Any suggestions?

Flow is good. RODI filters are fine, they were just changed 3 months ago and my filtered water reads 0ppm.

What do you think about adding some hermits to help with the problem?

I used to have the same problem. I use tooth brush to take them off and everyday, i use the turkey baster to blast the rock. My algea problem slowly going away. You may check your flow again.

Yeah, I do the same techniques but it still comes back. I was really wondering if maybe hermits might help?

I don't know if it is hair algae? It is a stringy algae but it is only maybe a quarter of an inch in length. The algae on the substrate is the same algae but is simply flat, no hair to it.

Overdose of AAHC? or some other element? Does it collect bubbles by the end of the photoperiod? How are your params? specifically N03 and P04. Does it go away after lights out? Present when they come on?

If it is the type I'm thinking of, I had the same type of algae problem when my tank was new. Daily removal by siphoning cleared it within a few weeks.

Params are all ok and I know it is not an overdose of AAHC. Yes, there are microbubbles by the end of the photoperiod. After the lights go out the bubbles go away the algae seems to continue to grow throughout the night because in the morning there is more of it.

I will try and post a picture of it tommorrow.

Did you test for silicates specifically? Your TDS meter may say 0 but you can still have too many silicates in the RODI water.
