  • Magnesium Complex

    Hi

My Mg levels are 1260 (salifert) and I'd like to raise it to 1350 on a 600ltr system.

The Zeo Mg Complex bottle states to add 3ml per 200ltr pd. How much MG is there in a given quality of the supplement so I can calculate how long to dose.

    Many thanks

Similar question: I have a low Mg concentration (900 ppm) and I am currently running Mg as 10% of volume in Ca reactor for a month now. Ca and KH look good where they are (410 ppm and 7.5 dkh respectively). Is Mg Complex what I want to use to boost this level while allowing the the Ca reactor to maintain the newly elevated level?

    Thanks

Magnesium in your Ca Reactor is an excellent way to maintain mg levels in the aquarium. It will not however, raise them.

Simon- I have no experience with the Zeo mag supplement. One way to approach your dosing is to dose 9 ml's today, and test tommorrow and see how much it has risen. And redose if necessary. As with any supplement, don't try and reach your desired level in one shot. Dose, test, dose test etc.

JWaltman- I have had the best results with the SeaChem Reef Advantage Mag. I have tried several of the liquids and the concentration was very low. A lot of the additive was necessary. The SeaChem is granulate and suspiciously resembles Epsom salts. I have heard of people using the ES to raise Mag, but personally wouldn't.

      HTH guys.

Magnesium Complex results after 4 days dosage

        Thanks Marshal

I have been dosing the recommended rate ie 3mls per 200lts (9ml total pd) for four days, and the salifert test kit still reads 1260.

Anyone know the Mg content per ml of this Zeo product?

        Many thanks

One other thing, how old is your test kit? I have found the shelf life on the mg tests from Salifert to get rather erratic after a few months. I would say accuracy really declines after 4. JMO

            Marshal:

Thanks for your help... it is greatly appreciated. I'll give the SeaChem material a shot. I heard that TM salt has Mg deficiencies (which I've been using for a few months)... I read elsewhere today that SeaChem salt has exellent Mg levels... I think I'll try switching that as well.

            Thanks again,

Simon, I run my tank with a constant Mg concentration of 1250 mg without any signs of problems. NSW has a concentration around 1270 mg so it is not absolute necessary to raise the level.

How much Mg complex to add

Thanks for the feedback - in case it helps others in the future - It took 300ml of Zeo MAgnesium Complex to raise Mg from 1260 to 1350 on a 600ltr reef.

Its now back down to 1260 within a week. I'll leave it there if Alexander is happy with it in his own tank

Ordered some Zeo MG granuals for the next CA reactor media change. Is there any guidance on what proportion to use please? CA media is currently ARM

                  MAny thanks

Hi Simon, generally 10-15% the CR capacity in which the Mg granules are placed on the top of the Ca media, Bob

Just pick up some epsom salts from the local drug store and dose it until you reach your desired level. Otherwise you could easily use a whole bottle of expensive mag supplements. Just dont use it long term w/out water changes or your sulfates will eventually start to build up. I just raised my mag from about 1100 to 1350 by putting about 700g of epsom salts. I had never tested for it prior to that. Im glad I am now.
