  • Ok almost ready for first ZEOlith change

I am changing out soon, and besides leaving 5 percent old ZEOliths what elso should i do?
Bob i lowered my start2 to 1/4 my dosage and bak and food because of brown growth on rocks. I currently run .25 ml 2 times a day of start2, and 4 drops of bak and food 2 times a week. Brown growth is still present. I am scraping all rocks and flipping them over this weekend. Also taking out fish for 4 weeks to rid of ich. As you can see its been a good month. The ich has been in there only affecting the new fish i add, Well only the one i added.
Must have introduced it when i added corals.
Anyways the tank will be fishless for a month, Should i wait till fish reintroduction to replace media?
    Thanks
If i keep my fish at hyposaline cond will this affect zeo's if i was to put the rx in the tub to keep ammonia down? I'll have about 40 gallons filled in a 50 gallon tub.
180 mixed reef, extreme 40gal frag tank, 33 gal sump,30 gal fuge, profilux plus II controller, profilux doser, GEO 618 CA/RX tunze 6100's, BK 250 internal, 2 400watt halides, 4 blue plus t-5's on icecap ballast, I run GFO, and dose vodka, sugar, and vinigar with ammino acids, and use somewhat of the balling method.

Hi my man[you really need to fess up & give us your nameThe reduced zeo-doses will be fine, although if you still develop brown small fur-balls, plz. repost. With new[1st exchange] zeolites, the Bak/Food are dosed every other day for the 1st 2wks[not daily], then 2x's/wk. Don't hesitate to change out the stones & begin Phase 2 with the zeo-components, as you're building the zeo-bacterial density when no interuption in dosing occurs.

Hyposalinity will not be a problem with ZEOvit in a fish-only basin. Bob

Raptor, unless the ich is DEF confirmed and bad I would not move them to another tank.. This will only cause further stress to the fish. If you added a new fish it seems to be common for them to get white spots which is not ICH at all.. I think many people miss diagnose ICH and end up doign more harm then good. The best place for a fish to get healthy is in a nice reef setup with stable params.. Feed it good food with garlic and the fish will come around. I have been keeping SW fish for 15 yrs and never treated for ICH and have not lost MANY fish over the years... If you can post a picture of the fish that would help also..

      Peace, Jeff

Thanks bob!!! And jeff i am holding off for a couple days. I have been feeding high protien and fatty acids along with garlic. I have 3 new fish the barred pygme angel, a emporer angel, and i dont have the third yet but i am getting a majestic and that will conclude my fish adding. The barred angel has no ich, and the rest of the fish i have had before except my achilles which looks to not have any new cysts in the last 2 days s free from ich. The emp is starting to get cysts, But all fish are eating and moving around. I added a vitamin rich stresscoat additive today that makes fish's slimecoat thicker. See if that works. My friend at a lfs says they do that in all their aquariums they maintain, and have good success with it and garlic feedings along with good healthy foods and suppliments along with good water.
        Wish me luck.
I did quarintine for a week to see if ich was on them, But it must be in my tank.

I think it might be more of a stress issue.

Maybe stress induced because they were wild fish making the acclimation.
They were q'ed for a week and didnt show signs of any ailment. It must have came on some corals and my fish have must have built an immunity for it.
The new except the barred angel has it. Its getting really bad on the emp, and he is getting lathargic.
I am giving him a fw bath and setting all the fish in hypo.
The angel looks more like marine velvet so a dip is a must anyways.
Oh boy am i happy. This is my luck!
I have had fish for over 20yrs and sw fish have got to be the biggest pain.
Fw is sooooo much easier. Discus included.LOL
On the bright side i have my motivation to not add anything else even corals.
I q everything except corals and that must be my downfall i guess.
The joy of ripping 300 lbs of liverock out, and plenty of corals.
Too bad i dont have a new tank.

For the most part i am finished. Yes! The emp gave me a scare he was all white i thought he was a goner. I fw dipped him, and tranqulized him with a fish tranq used for shipping. Added methelene blue, and droped the salinity 1/4, 4 hrs later. The emp is back to himself , and the achilles is doing much better as well.
The others are the same so, all in all a good outcome of my extended efforts.
              Knock on wood.
Scrubbed alot of the brown crap off, and the tank doesent have that eyesore anymore. Now i can get the tanks perameters much better without the fish in there. Now time for some brew.

Hi, since you're not forth-coming with a name, I'll christened you "Stan-The Man"[a St. Louis favorite]. Stan, large angel fish are sponge-eaters in the wild, & I've found especially with Emperators, that Ocean Nutrition's "Angel Formula" which is spnge-based to be extremely beneficial in their overall health, color, growth, & vigor. Hey stan the man here LOL! I just am updating this thread, So far i am very happy, I have all my corals at i can say a 50 percent change for the better in color. I still have a bit to go, But i am on the right track.
All the brown growth died off (What was left anyways, and alot of my corals look great. I do have a couple of sps that are fading to white, and i cut my halide time from 7 and 10 hrs 2 400's 7 and the center halide 10 hrs down to all at 7hrs. Now i still think i can cut down some more i am thinking on 6 hrs then if that still doesent work 5 hrs. (Sound good?)
Trates are undetectable and so is po4. ca is 400 and alk is 7dkh. Ph is 8.1-8.3, and mg is still 1300.
I have doubled up on my waterchanges and that has helped alot with my brown growth, But i plan to cut back to once weekly 30 gallons, and when i run out start running seachem salt instead of IO.
Has anybody made the switch of the 2? Just looking for some feedback on switching. This is the first time i am attempting to switch.
I have about 100 gallons of waterchange of IO left.
My skimmer is not pulling much out anymore which i dont mind. I may pop a smaller pump on there i have laying around and keep the iwaki just in case i need to rev it up again.

Hi Alex, glad to hear your corals are improving. If you're planning to switch saltmixes, do so at 50-50 for a time before weaning IO down to zero--this will be less stressful to your corals. Bob
