  • feeding corals in a zeo system

2nd week zeo now.before i started zeo i used to feed my tank every other night in the dark usually this was the mixture : 3cc oyster eggs,1 cc daphnia,1 cc cylco & .5 ml selcon.
sps responded realy well ,i never shut the skimmer,uv ,03,so not risking to pollute the water
i never had any algae problems before, never even diatom, since stopping the o3 & uv(starting zeo) ,i have a very little bit of diatom now no other algae the glass gets cleaned once every 4 days
let me know what your thoughts are cause personally i strongly believe in feeding sps, for color & growth ,i think my less p/e for the past week might have a little bit to do with stop feeding the tank as well thanx

That sure is a lot of coral food to throw into a tank your size
    400 gallon reef, Bubble King 300, I~Spin, 2 x 10,000K BLV 400W, 2 x 20,000K Radium 400W, 2 x 6,400K Osram 400W, Schuran Jetstream 1, AquaController Pro

yes alot of people say so,i never had any problems with it i did 15% w/c weekly
      change 1l carbon biweekly & o3 & skimmer 24/7 ,120 g/rowa/mo,refugium 24/7,dsb& good cleaning crew
you should read some of eric bornemans food threads on rc,our tanks can take alot ore feeding that we think,if you get your system used to it slowly,i m sure some you guys have seen my tank pix ,no algae, good growth & colors for the past 2 years

Hi Jason, your feeding schedule is fine if you feel you must feed your corals, but the quantity could be reduced w/o missing a beat[50%], as Timon mentioned. Be sure you have a Si-DI canister after your RO filament. Our zeolites do release some Si's which, IME, only is apparent for the 1st few months, then disappears as our reef's metabolism becomes balanced in it's removal. I personally feed FOE, a thumbnail quantity 2-3x's/wk, along with daily AAHC & C-V. This is in addition to 2-3x's/day light fish-feedings. Bob

thanx bob,i don't feed the fish that much ,lightly only twice a week
as for the corals,i have not fed anything beside the zeo stuff for
the past 2 weeks,i was worried about si & po4 now that i am not using rowa & zeo is new to my system
i guess i keep it very, very light for now 1cc foe once/wk thanx

Have read all the threads, all the books and tried many systems and recipes

One thing to keep in mind is that not all aquarists have the same goals and a person like Borneman may not find getting a Fiji tricolor to color up so vibrantly that it glows in the dark a main priority

i cannot agree with you anymore ,however my personal experience the more you feed the nicer they look & grow given that you export the food before it starts to pollute your water
imo smaller size particle food (oa)get picked up by the skimmer pretty easy, thats why people like to shut thier skimmer when feeding the stuff ,i just feed more per serving to have more foodparticle density/watervolume to give each polyp a chance to feed& @ the same time skimm it right out
so i guess i am wasting alot of food this way,but corals seem happy

And with cyclop-eeze and oyster eggs it's all good. It's the squid, shrimp, big macs, haagen-daz and other ingredients mentioned in some of those recipes that bother me :p

i know, some crazy ingridients out there,i always wonder how some of these food smell comming out of the mixer
personaly i am alergic to seafood so you won't catch me dead peeling a shrimp or cut squid to put in the mixer
corals might like it(might is the key word),but it will kill me
so i guess i can say i really love my fish i would not eat them ,even if my life was dependent on it
