  • Trying out zeo

Well i made the decision today to take the leap. I am starting cautiously with just the media and zeobak and food. I did order some pohls coral vitalizer as well. I am in a rut with my tank and cant get the po4 and trates low enough to color up my corals the way i want.
Is 1 litre of media enough for 190 gallon tank?
I run a deltec rowa rx(509) a mrc cr2 ca/rx, a mrc mr3 skimmer running wet, and a fluidized filter for carbon (Black diamond) Changed every other week.
I change 40-60 gallons a month not including the water i replace for running wet.
I cannot for the life of me get my po4 under .005(Where its been for 3 mos now but atleast its stabil) and trates are always around 5 ppm.
180 mixed reef, extreme 40gal frag tank, 33 gal sump,30 gal fuge, profilux plus II controller, profilux doser, GEO 618 CA/RX tunze 6100's, BK 250 internal, 2 400watt halides, 4 blue plus t-5's on icecap ballast, I run GFO, and dose vodka, sugar, and vinigar with ammino acids, and use somewhat of the balling method.

Oh i forgot i have a low fish load 3 vey small fish, and one 3 inch hippo tang.
I feed very lightly every other day. All fish are healthy and happy.
I run a ssb with around 2 inches of southdown.
    My salinity is 1.023
    Ca is 450
    mg is 1300
alk is 200 ppm i think thats close to 12 dkh
My ph is 8.1-8.3 (Morn to lights off)
Sps are drab excessive brown or green.
I have had the po4 rx going for over a year. I change out around every month when the levels start to rise again. Still curious because i have a light load.
I have a very small amount of pest algae growing. (Not much and i harvest it frequently)
The tank is 190 with a 40 gallon sump.
I dont use uv or ozone. My orp levels are always at 330 to 360Mv.
    I use 2 400 and a 250 watt mh's with 10k bulbs for 9 hrs a day and run 320w of vho super actinic.
Thats all i can think of off hand.
I am pturbed because i should not be having these problems i am at my wits end.

Before starting with the system, please make sure you read and understood the zeovit guide, which link you can find in this thread:

      http://www.zeovit.com/forums/showthread.php?t=636

If you need a dosing recommendation, please answer the questions in the following thread:

      http://www.zeovit.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14

I know this is a little bit homework at the beginning but necessary to run the system successfully.

Thanks, i did see that by invincable after i posted and edited my last post.
Thanks for the link! I plan on reading up. I am leary of the start products as i hear of bleaching problems when overdosed.

          Welcome to the club

One thing I noticed is your alkalinity i too high. It's fine for right now but you want to start bringing it down slowly. Shoot for somewhere around 7.5-8. I like to keep mine around 8. As it comes down, your ca might fall as well so make sure to keep an eye on it.

Thanks ouinla, Yes i did try to lower it and ca went down as well. 360 when i lowered alk to 140 ppm. So i was a little on the nervous side with ca that low.
Maybe i can find a happy medium.

Welcome to ZEOvit.com. after completing the questionnaire "tell us about your tank" [sticky near the top of this forum]zeo-dosing recommendations can be given. BTW, the new Start2 does not & will not cause bleaching of our corals, as could the original Start1. Bob

There are a few ways to bring you ca back up. You can use a calcium additive like Turbo Calcium. This will raise Ca without raising alk. It does raise salinity slightly as well. There is also a product from the makers of zeovit called "zeo calcium". This is a media that is added to your reactor for the sole purpose of raising ca. It is not to be confused with or replace traditional reactor media. It is used in conjuntion with your normal reactor media in small percentages.

ohh thanks i may have to try the zeo ca rx additive.
I have tons of ca clhoride as well. about 50 lbs to be exact, But i stopped using it with the addition of the ca/rx.

I sure hope this works, I have tried everything in the book tons of waterchanges, big and small. I have good deal of flow, and corals that i got from ora and ones that have been known to do well in cap are doing good. Just new aquacultured and wild never get to the glory they once were.
I see all the time that people leave things out to not make themselves look bad, But i am not. I have had fw tanks for ofer 20 yrs so i have the just of it with my additional 2-3 yrs. Could the rock be leaching po4 out?
I see some tanks and i am jealouse because i know mine shoud look like that on all the money and time i throw into it.
I am getting frustrated and almost ready to scrap the reef and just take up drinking. LOL

Hi, if you know & understand the methodology behind ZEOvit, you will have the coral colors that you so ardently wish. With the ZEOvit method, the parameters mirror those of NSW-- Ca>400<450/Mg>1250/KH 6-8/salinity 1.023-26. It's imperative not to begin ZEOvit in a established reef until the above parms are inline, so as not to stress your corals; reduce the KH gradually over a wk or 2. Do purchase Start2, it is completely safe & necessary in reducing your nutrients. Undoubtably, you'll have nutrients seeking nutrient-equilibrium in your reef for a time, but there's no need to replace these. GFO & other P04 removers are not used with ZEOvit or for that matter necessary & in fact detrimental to it's function. Do not use KW; just RODI water for topping off your reef. For your system, I recommend:

1)dose 2 Cups carbon in a filter bag, passively in a low flow area of your sump, kneaded 3-4x's/wk & exchanged monthly.
2)dose 1 1/2 ltr. zeolites in a zeo-filter with the flow rate of ~150gph. Cycle your zeo-filter on & off at 3hr. intervals, being certain that the stones remain submerged in water when the filter is "off". A inline check valve to your zeo-filter may be needed. Exchange the zeolites every 6wks.
3)dose 4 drops Bak & Food daily for 2wks. with new zeolites, then 6 drops each 2x's/wk. Dose these when the filter is "on" & near the intake filter pump. Turn off your skimmer for 60min after dosing Bak/Food7. ZeoBak is refrigerated.[also Coral-Vitalizer] These dosages will change with the next zeolite change-out.
4)dose Start2 1ml 2x's/day daily. It is not necessary to turn off the skimmer when just dosing Start2
                          5)Optional: dosing AAHC & C-V, 3-4 drops & 10 drops respectively daily.

Thanks for helping me. Hope i can repay the debt some day.

Yes, any canister with bottom-to-top flow can be used to hold your zeolites. One can shake the filter up & down a few times once or twice a day to clean the zeolite surfaces. CaptiveOceans[scottw] & Madison[OUinLA]is now selling a superbly built zeo-filter for much less than the GroTech. Bob
