  • Update on my ~450g fire hazard

BK400 external finally up and running. Dead silent, incredibly finebubbles, but there are some design issues IMO. Too soon to comment on skimming per se, but it shows a lot of promise.

The whole tamale minus the lighting setup. Still working on that. Also still hashing out the electrical stuff on the left hence the open cabinet door and all the cords on the floor.

Finally a couple shots of the 10 postage stamp size purple tangs. These dudes were on firesale b/c they've got HLLE. A little fresh veggies will take care of that.

Yeah, I know, the tang police and cleaner wrasse police are coming for me.....

    Looks great Chuck!

what did you ever decide to do with the back plates? did you cut them up or no?

also how do you like the flow you are getting?

what is the ETA of you adding that nice goldflake i keep hearing about from Dave?

coming along nice, cant wait to see it with lights, are you still doing 3 LA3's?

      Nick,
I did not cut the back plates. I filled the edges with LR branches and I didn't want to come all the way to the right side wall anyways--avoid scratches.

Flow seems good. I don't think I'm gonna use anything else. Granted it's not a sps tank either.

The goldflake--maybe right before thanksgiving. I wanna make sure the system is stable. The current residents are guinea pigs--let's be frank here. If they weren't HLLE postage stamp size purples (ie a bargain), I would've used green chromis or something instead to "test the waters".

3LAIIIs but we're on major delays on that front....

        Chuck,

I got my LA III's in and I love them. I do not see much difference withthe 1600 watts of lighting I currently have and the 2600 I had before, in either light intensity or heat, maybe a degree cooler, but I don't have the LA III's as low as I wan tthem yet.

Tank looks like it's coming together including your electrical spaghetti.

It's always fun doing a new tank. I just redid my refugium and have had fun doing that. It's now more of a live rock filter with some chaeto in it, no more sand. Keep us updated. I am the last one to call the tang police as I have a purple, hippo, naso and Dussemieri (which is getting big) alond with my Conspic, Blue Face, Asfur and Imperator, oh my - and the Chrysurus in the refugium.

          Sounds good Chuck.

i really like the look of the Tonga Branch in there.

you better take pics of that goldflake when you get him in there.

i think that would be cool to see a nice school of purple tangs when they grow up alittle. do you notice any schooling now?

what are the delays on the lighting? cant get Dave over there to build you a nice contraption like he did from Ted?

Beautiful! And everyone, this set-up is FAR more impressive in person.

It'll be interesting to see if your design issues are the same ones I concluded. This is NOT a rant, I absolutely love the skimmer but here is my list of improvements ....

I wish the RD was a stand alone unit. The back flow when the RD is turned off pushes water still passing thru up the air intake (and of course soaks the silencer).

The intake should also be larger for those who don't pressurise the water input.

There should be a valve on the drain.

The "T" on the riser tubes should be threaded since you have to glue the PVC in.

Nothing is perfect and every skimmer has to be modified for your set-up but I feel like these changes would improve ease of use and ability to change things. Also metric to US converters should be included - but Klaus already said that was taken care of.

Additionally, there is the wasted space under the skimmer. I think the drain pipes should come out the side of the bottom instead of the bottom. 2" of height to be gained that way. I feel that there should be one large caliber outlet--the 2 outlet thing is a pain.

You know Dave, I don't get the water shooting into the silencer....

However I am amazed by the bubble quality.

With reference to the wasted space under the skimmer, do you notice any detrius build up there? i have noticed that i have a pretty nice size build up on the bottom.

                        Nick,

The lighting is at Chuck's. A friend of mine is building him some fancy hinges to hang them from.

But the fact is - The Lumenarcs, Ballasts, Bulbs -- Everything needed to make light Chuck has... Roust his butt to get some light on the tank.

Haha, sounds like it should be a top notch lighting setup.

Chuck what ballast and bulbs did you decide to go with?

                          thanks

                            Nick,

It's Chuck. Between now and when the hinges are done, Chuck will probably have bought 3 more different options for both bulbs and ballasts.

                              In fact,

We should make Chuck an honorary member for our local club. All he has to do is donate 1/2 of his monthly replaced equipment to our raffle table - The raffle would go nuts.
