  • Has anyone every seen this before?

Hey guys, long story short i have a coral i have had for less than 4 days here. i forget the scienctific name, but the common name is the Crayaloa table (sp?). Its about 5-6" and has a nice tabling pattern.

anyway when it came in there was a very bright blue sponge on it, so of course i pulled that off right away. I have been watching the area where the sponge and took some pics.

i am not happy with how things are turning out. It looks to be very porus, with a white/greenish color. the couple of branches that are coming out of that area are STNing on me. but the rest of the coral is doing great. polyps out and extended, coloring up day by day.

I talked with Andy at Reefer madness about this issue and he said he has never seen this before. Chirs is out of town. he said to watch it closely and maybe try some epoxy or super glue to stop the STN, if that doesnt work and it continues then try to cut out the infected back and examine closely to see if more sponge is in there.

just wondering what you guys think? i already threw some epoxy over the area.

    anyway here are 3 pics,

    and a close up pic

sorry for the blurry pic, hard to get a good shot of it.

anyway any advise would be great, i hope i dont loose the whole coral, altough Andy said they will replace it. but its such a nice piece, very nice growth pattern to it and i think it will turn out to be a nice color.

If you want i could take a pic of how it looks now with all the epoxy over it.

    let me know guys. thanks!

just watch it closely and frag it if the epoxy bandaid doesn't work.

Thanks, i will wait and see what happens, i would hate to break up suck a nice piece. Madison do you really think its a hyacinthus? it wasnt sold to me as that because i would never buy a colony of hyacinthus because of the poor survival rate.

anyway i will wait and see what happens here. i couldnt get it down into the small cracks inbetween branches so we will see what happens....

      thanks

No, i'm not sure at all. I can't really tell from the pics. After looking, it doesn't look like hyacinthus to me. It looks more like A. sarmentosa

Alright here are 3 shots, they are not the best. The color is way off, but you get the idea.

anyway let me know what you think.

                thanks

It should be all white this morning. . I've had the very same thing happen before. Base-attached sponge will cause TN in re-shipping--did the water in which it arrived have an odor? Was the water murky? Chris will replace this for you, Bob

Hey Bob well this water was clear, it did smell alittle funny now that you mention it though. Never thought about the water smelling before, but it did.

The coral is still there this morning, the polyps are out and it seems happy, maybe the super glue/epoxy band-aid helped alittle.

i will watch it closely and let you guys know what happend.

any idea on an ID for this guy?

Andy from RM said they would replace it if anything a happend which is a relief.

Not sure about the problem but sponges can be very toxic and and probably released some toxins due to shipping stress and being moved from ocean to bag to tank to bag to tank and being exposed to air. It may also have nothing to do with the sponge at all. It is a table coral and, IME, wild tables have the poorest survival rate.

BTW, I wouldn't say it is a crayola table. I believe the original crayola table is an A. desalwii. Not sure what species yours is but certainly doesn't look like A. desalwii. Also, I don't know why common corals are being sold as crayola tables anyways. It was one coral that was given a name but now a lot of different corals go by the same name. RM seems notorious for doing this. Kind of like how they took the name "Miyagi" and put it on every A. Austera that comes in.

                        thanks.
