  • New tank setup/New to Zeovit system

Hello everyone! I am new to this forums, and have been lurking for the past couple weeks. I have about 12 years experience in salt, but have not had a tank up in about 1 1/2 years. Long story short, we had a home built, warranty says no undo humidity for the first 11 months, so that meant no tank. I sold off the system to a friend, but all special acros, and fish where given to a select few friends for safe keeping. The end of my exile is at hand, and I have started reintroducing myself to the hobby. I am very excited with all the new concepts that have come about in my time away. Now onto my proposed system.

My new house has a very nice unfinished room over the garage. The roof is slanted at a 45 degree angle to the south. My plans were to install 3 13" solartubes directly over where the fish tank will be placed. I have seen 1 tank lit by solartubes and it was very nice, granted it was in Arizona. I would like any thoughts against or for this plan

The tank will be 60"x40"x24". This is roughly 250 gallons. Front will be starfire, it will also have euro bracing. It will also have a external overflow that runs along the back of the tank. Tank will be drilled for a closed loop in the back and also for a OM in the bottom, and returning to the tank on the sides. Not sure what type of pumps to run, but have been reading many good things about the sequence brand. In my last tank I used a type of spinning hottub nozzle in the return of my closed loop system. I see some of you have used something similar to that.

I will have a calcium reactor and Protien skimmer, and Zeo reactor. I have a 150 gallon rubbermaid tub that will be the sump. Tank will be bare bottom, I was also thinking of using some of the ceramic rock structures I have seen for sale on some sites.

I guess that is about as far as I have got in the plan. Feel free to add some of your infinate knowlege to make my system plan better.

i really love the solatubes. They are perfect if you're in an area with plenty of sunlight throughout the year. You might think about sqeezing a MH or two in there incase you have a series of cloudy days. At least have some T5's or VHO's so you can see the tank at night as well.

Other than that, it sounds like you have a great system to get going . Feel free to ask any questions.

I've been reefkeeping since the mid-1980s ... it really is rather extraordinary, isn't it? ...

Solartubes are something I've always wanted to play around with ... sounds very cool. I'm with Madison ... some supplemental MH and actinic lighting might be something to consider (if you're not already), as well as some moonlights. With some timers, I would think that you could generate some pretty dramatic effects.

Sweet .. love the proportions. This will present you with a whole set of light vs. shadow, and aquascaping options not available to standard proportioned tanks.

What kind of fish population are you considering? A refugium for live food culture, located above the main display so that copepods, amphipods, mysids ... etc ... can be introduced into the main display through gravity flow might be useful. Some additional options might include a "surge" tank, remote frag and "specialty" specimen refugia. An independent quarantine and/or treatment system might also be useful.

The system sounds VERY nice ... pictures ... PLEASE post pictures.
