  • Need some help! Damn macro algae out of control!

Ok, so I have been fighting with macro algae in my prop tank for months by just picking it out. Its now out of control to the point of smothering some corals. I bought a tang and a foxface to eat the chit but the tang doesnt touch it and the foxface was doa.

I have the feather looking macro and the razor stuff. I just noticed a little tuft of grape calupra as well now. NEED HELP! I cant take this stuff anymore and I dont have the time to everynight go in an try to pull this stuff out!

Any ideas and thoughts are appreciated. BTW its a 60g tank 48x24x12.

Best thing i can tell you (went through this with my old 180) to do is to yank ANY rocks at all that contain that grape caulpera and take it out and scrub it!

i had it TAKE OVER everything in my 180 in a matter of 4 months.

it sucked i bought a foxface lo (supposed to eat it) but never touched the stuff!

          i was running ZEO too.

anyway good luck, post in Calfo's forum over on RC he gave me some nice ideas on what to do. but i just upgraded.

          good luck man.

Thanks man, I have been doing that, but there is so much stuff in there and its on nearly every stinking rock. I am banned from the infamous RC =P.

I found ZEO did control the grape to the point it's no longer an issue.
On the other hand that red fuzzy stuff the looks like a dark red cotton candy is another thing all together. If ever you see it on a coral you get... dump the dang thing in the trash.

I'm not trying to get PO4's down lower than .05-.06 so your mileage may vary.

Hey, i feel you, it was on every rock except about 5 in my 180.....

it sucked, it looked like hell. i would manual pull it out, but then in another 1-2 weeks it would come back.....

good luck man, the zeo will help as Steve said, i was at a point where it wasnt spreading, but just wouldnt go away....

That red cotton candy stuff is hell. I only had it in my fuge but was very afraid that it would get into my display. I think I finally have it beat with the help of a sea hare and some Mexican Turbos. Only a little bit left and the sea hare is gobbling it down. Mine came in on LR.

The red cotton candy ... err ... stuff ... is probably the gametophytic phase of an Asparagopsis species.

                            Possibly Asparagopsis taxiformis ...

Perhaps a more useful and diagnositic picture is presented within this SeaScope article:

Asparagopsis taxiformis: A troublesome reef algae.
                            Michael P. Janes, 2003.

For more, see Algaebase.org's Asparagopsis taxiformis page.
If not correct species, see Algaebase.org's Genus Asparagopsis page.

Pesky stuff indeed. I would strongly suggest physical removal ASAP ...

                            ... ...
... it's spitting out gametes as we speak ... ... :cursin:
