  • Magnet and Acrylic Solution?

Hey guys i was going to clean my acrylic today and thought of something.

as some of you may recall i had problems with my acrylic scratching when using a Tiger Shark Float magnet.

anyway i got some of those acrylic safe pads that you use by hand, they are about 1" thick.

i was thinking what about throwing that on the inside of the tank? since you use these by hand instead of having your arm in the tank you could use the magnet.

i also throw some of those cloth paper towels on the "dry" side of the magnet (outside the tank) and got it damp to clean the outside of the tank too.

then when all do i took a dry cloth paper towel and wiped up the excess water on the out side.

    what do you guys think?

    will this work?

    thanks!

    Nick

the problem is usually getting something caught in the pad that you don't notice.

This is why I went away from acrylic and went starfire for my 240 tank.. I had a 90 gallon acrylic before and no matter how careful you are you will get scratches.. They do have there place though, just not with me anymore.. I am like moon.. Its the stuff getting trapped in the pad thats going to do all the damage...

        Thanks Chuck and Jeff.

i checked the pad after each plane of acrylic,

i am hoping this works, because its too much time to do it with a kent scrapper and plus the way i just did is more efficent and gets everything with the scrapper its ahrd to get every spot.

Hi Nick, if you use the acrylic-safe hand pad, I like to clean with one side for a several wipes then flip it over to proceed. I then shake the pad loose of particles while it's under water or place it in front of one of my Seaswirls to blast both sides then proceed again to clean. It really becomes automatic after a while. I like acrylic for many reasons but the flip side of what Jeff mentioned, is once one has a scratch in the glass, it's there until you empty the tank. The scratch removal kit[Rainbow] is all you need & with it's various grades of sandpaper works well & is undetectable. Bob

            thanks Bob,

the kit should be here soon, on back order right now...

so you think if i flip the pad over after each pannel of acrylic, do you think that would be sufficent?

that way i could still use the magnet (like stated above) and when i go onto the next viewing pannel i could flip the pad over.

this woudl be the best of both worlds for me, not scatching the acrylic and getting to use my magent?

            thanks.

Nick, I really have never used the magnet technique to comment on your question--my reefer friends that have used magnets on acrylic tanks have always cautioned not to take the magnet down to the lower portion of the pane as it can pick up particles onto the pad between the magnets then create scratching marks across it's path.
