  • No SPS ZEO tank - Higher Nutrients

I've been running what I'd call a passive amount of zeo for several months. This is not a system for SPS but for propagation of xenia and various softies.

I'm getting ready to make some mods to the system by changing some lighting and re-routing some plumbing to reduce the cost of running the system.

The system is about 350g and my normal ZEOlit amount is about 1 liter. That seems to work OK but I really wonder sometimes if the lower amount of media just causes it to wear out sooner. None the less I change it out at about 2 months.

Do you think the life of the stone is more determined by the flow through the reactor or the nutrient level in the system? (I know it's a combination of both )

Also,,, has anyone set up a reactor fed by gravity from the tank overflow? I have 7 returns and can easly tee off one to fed this low flow. Feeding the Grotech reactor with the Eheim seems like such a waste since I've got to valve down the pump to maybe 30% of max to get the flow low enough anyway.

Hi Steve, as you surmised, both factor in to the zeolites half-life. For your situation, I'd use 2 ltrs. zeolites without increasing the flow rate from before, but run them for 12-16 wks. One can extend their longevity by pumping the stones more often[4x's/day as opposed to 2x's/day]. Bob

Bob... What's your thought on keeping the reactor in a fuge area of the system instead of the sump.
I have a couple fuges with Sponges and Ascidians. The flow through these are about 300gph each.
I'm thinking maybe the duff from the stones will feed these.

She's on Air-Blue to California as we speak She's seen your biceps

I see no problem with the zeo-filter in your refugia, as your current seems adequate to keep the mulm moving, unless it's movement into your main display is impeded by LS. Bob

            GTR,
I noticed a significant improvement in the Ascidians that lived in the sump downstream from the zeoreator. FWIW.
