  • BB and Zeovit

    Yeah first post.

im currently in the process of setting up my new tank (120 gallon).

Untill recently i have been a big fan of my tanks having a Bare bottom to avoid nasty build ups of detritus. and i was planning to continue with this in the new tank. i have since decided that i will be using zeovit as i have been very impressed with the results of some locals.

is there any conflict with having BB in a zeo tank (i think ive seen one or two BB tanks on this site) and does anyone have any reccomendation for substrate in the new tank

Hi Brianenome, welcome to ZEOvit.com You guys down under are lucky to have a knowledgeable zeo-dealer in Brendan[Kiwireefer] for help with any questions on the system. Also this forum has many zeo-users, like Vince, who are happy to help in anyway possible. Plz. keep us posted on your progress, thnx. Bob

        Gday mate, WELCOME!!

IMO there is no real need to run BB with the ZEO system, as it is such an effective nutirent export. But Many also use BB w/zeo, such as Vince, and the results are awesome too. It all comes down to what you like visually.

        But thats JMO

          Welcome to ZeoVille !

I have run newly established BB and SSB (shallow sand bottom) systems using ZEOvit and observed no differences in terms of ZEOvit methodology and/or water parameter behavior. The presence of SSBs or DSBs established prior to the introduction/application of the ZEOvit system in a tank has been reported to have the potential to extend the time required to move from phase 1 to phase 2 ... a larger nutrient reserve to overcome as the system moves to an oligotropic equilibrium.

Other than that, aesthetics and husbandry preferences remain the primary issues regarding substrate style selection.

BB tanks lake the 'natural' feeling of a tank with a SSB or DSB. Like what the others said, if the DSB/SSB has been established before running zeovit, then it will take an extended amount of time to deplete the nutrients stored but you will definately reach stage 3 sooner or later.

If you starting off a new tank with SSB, then it wouldnt make a difference in terms of nutrients since zeovit methodology wouldnt allow the nutrients to be stored in the first place.

Only advantage I personally see in BB is water flow without worry of sandstorms

I run BB. I actually did an epoxy resin and sand mixture for a solid substrate that looks like sand.. I have had it for 11 months and its awesome.. I have tons of flow in my 240 13500 GPH per hr. I know I could come nowhere close to that with a DSB or SSB.. Here is the link. I was gqjeff on the thread. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...t=faux+sandbed

If you have any questions PM me.. Also WELCOME to zeovit.com....

Yeah, my wife vetoed my idea of removing all the sand in my tank.So as a compromise, its a SSB now...
