  • Piece of Crap Magnet!!!!

Hey guys well i was cleaning my acrylic today with the Tiger Shark Magnet, and guess what!

    it scratched my new tank!!!!!

i am so pissed off right now!

i check the magnet before each use and after each pannel of acrylic!

    so i haev 2 questions,

    1. after looking at the scratches they are both inside and outside the tank, so what can i use to get them off? and can i get the inside ones off without hurting my corals and fish....

    2. what magnet should i use? i have been using the acrylic safe white pad and after i looked very closely at the acrylic it has been scratching the acrylic very fine lines though...

is there a better magnet out there to use? i thought spending 100 bucks on a magnet was enough! what the heck should i use to NOT scratch my tank up?

    thanks again!

Sorry to hear about the scratches, but that's why I never use a magnet cleaner on acrylic. I use both the acrylic-pad & Kent's pro-scraper. I use one of the Kent's specifically for the front panel only & a separate one for the sides, back & bottom, Bob

i have a kent pro scraper also the one for acrylic tanks maybe i should just use that?

what are these acrylic pads? any links to them? are they just estianlly pads that use by hand on the inside of the tank? how long do they last and about how much are they per pad?

any ideas on how to get the scratches out that are there already? and can i do this with live stock in the tank?

        thanks!

Mann. dat sucks. There are a couple of products that allows you to buff of minor scratches on Acrylic. Why dunt you check with your tank builder if he has some for your use.

              Nick,

I'd love to hear what James suggests - if you could post with his suggestions, I'd appreciate it. When he delivered my tank, he included a white piece of plastic he wanted to try out as scraper material, which has worked great - although I don't know exactly what it is - prob delrin. It wasn't attached to a handle, so I'm been using the kent pro scraper as well for the deep areas of the tank.

As for magnets, the acrylic on my tank is 1" thick, and I use a Tunze magent (220.55, I believe) with their acrylic pads, which has worked great except for the hardest coralline. I'd recommend it, although it would be pretty similar in price to your current magnet.

              HTHs!

                i will let you know.

i should have asked him to throw in one of his scapers... did he charge you for it?

maybe he can make me one?

anyway i will post what he says, it may take 1-2 days for him to respond.

Basically, don't use magnets to clean acrylic tanks period.

exterior scratches are easy. For minor, the novus 1,2,3 will work. For more serious a series of micromesh sandpapers.

Interior is harder. You actually either have to by hand OR....by using a magnet use the micromesh series.

ok ,I run a service company and sometimes 1 of my guys will scratch a pexi tank,After 20 yrs of doing show cars ive came up with a great way to remove scratches in tanks ...

MATERIALS 1. 2000 grit 3m wet&dry sandpaper (local pep boys or auto paint store)
                            2. 3m perfect it glaze (black bottle) (local auto parts store )
                            2. rainbow lifegard scratch removal kit

Ok for the outside I take the rubber block that comes inside the kit and cut the 3m 2000 grit sandpaper to fit around it.Then with a CLEAN rag and a bucket of clean water I dip the rag and sandpaper and get them wet along with the scratches then I sand out the scratches constantly keeping everything wet with clean water ,using a ONE WAY direction when sanding (use towels to keep your floor and stand dry)once the scratches are completly gone I use the 6000 grit sandpaper that comes in the kit and I repete the process,Then get a clean terry cloth towel and slightly dampen the whole thing ,then squirt the 3m perfect it glaze on the rag ,then scrub the scratches in a one way motion ,then once you think they are gone follow with a very clean new white t- shirt quality rag and wipe the area ,or you can do what i do and look for a clean washed shirt with a stain or hole and have your girlfriend yell at you .. lol ....

for the inside of the tank follow the kits instructions it works very well for the inside with the water and corals and fish inside .. also you will spend about 60.00 after buying everything but if you have a acrylic tank this stuff will last forever ,and you will scratch it again . Now about the magnet Ive found the mag float 350 will clean up to a 300gal tank but theres a catch ....heres what you must do if you have a plexi tank (this is only with he mag float,I cant say for certain till I see a magnet ,all brands varie) make sure the inside part of the magnet is free 100% of rocks etc. feel it under water with your finger nail ,then go to your super market and buy one of those sponges that have the net on the outside of em take the sponge out and put your magnet in.. (they also sell these at fish stores for acrylic tanks ) ,Then go to where you keep your white socks and put the outside of the magnet inside it ,then get it completly damp or wet .now clean your tank -as long as you dont pick up a rock from the inside you will be fine ......when you finish you can use brillinize to wax it ,it works the best, much better than novus
This is the same theroy as --- you will scratch a show paint job on a black car with a dry diaper, but if the diaper is damp and clean it wont scratch, this is how you dry wash a show car without scratching it
