  • Finally Starting ZEO on New 220 System - Dosing?

    Hi All,

    Well our new setup has gone from redoing the existing 100 gallon, to upgrading to a 150 to well we have and filled a new 220 gallon with all new equipment. Ended up having to move....apartment circuits could not handle the chiller and 3 400watt MH So to make a long story short we are in a new place and have the 220 setup with most of the equipment going on it as well...still have to hook up the Tunze Osmolater, Medusa Dual Stage, Schuran JS1 and the ZEO system. Our tank is a 220 and we are running the water level 2" below where it typically would be to accomodate the Tunze wavebox, we also have a 35 gallon sump below the tank. Tank was filled with brand new crushed coral and all new RO/DI water with Tropic Marin Pro-Reef Salt. Was filled about 2 weeks ago and have been getting lighting/ other equipment figured out. BK 300 has been running a little over a week.

    1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) 210 Gallons after rock with sump
    2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) 210 gallons
    3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique, will be Schuran JS1 w/ Peri (masterflex) pump
    4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.) No
    5. Are you using Ozone No
    6. Are you using UV No
    7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume) Bubble King 300 Internal (Not even broken in yet)
    8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels PO4 came out 0.35 on Hanna Colorimeter (rock must be high in PO4?) Will test NO3 later
    9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels Will check later but should be close to where they need to be
    10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.) None other then ~200 lbs of liverock (1-4 years old never any nuisance algae)
    11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.) 3 Brand New 400 watt Icecap Electronic Ballasts with 10k Coralvue Reflux bulbs (also new) with Lumenarc LAIII reflectors (large not minis), with 2 5' Actinics powered by an Icecap 660 Ballast (bulbs new, ballast ~1 year old).
    12. What corals do you keep None currently planning on SPS dominated with some LPS
    13. Tissue color (light or dark) None Currently
    14. How long has the tank been running ~2 weeks
    15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system Color and Polyp Extension
    16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.) Currently none - will be all ZEO addatives though later
    17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.) ~200 lbs of 1-4 year old Figi never any nuisance algae
    18. Any present problems, PO4 is high other parameters unknown at time
    19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.) No corals in tank no problems currently
    20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.) All Salifert ~1 year old and a new Hanna PO4 Colorimeter
    21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.) This is my question
    22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.) Salinity 1.026, temp is 79

    Water flow is created through 4 Tunze 6100s with a 7095 multicontroller, a Tunze wavebox and 2 Eheim 1262 return pumps (about 1100 gph between them maybe a little more - these create surface flow only.

    I am posting to ask what I should dose for ZEOfood, ZEObak, ZEOstart2. We are planning on running 2 liters of ZEOlithes (what should the flow through the rocks be - was planning about 100 gph). Also planning on running 2 cups of the ZEOvit Activated Carbon - kneeded 3x's weekly. We were planning on doing 16 drops of ZEOfood, ZEObak daily (basically doing the low dose of 2 drops/25 gallons). Would it be better to do more? Also when you dose where sould you add it in your tank...by the zeo reactor? The Zeobak we were planning on declining the dosing in as the ZEOguide says - after change out 8 drops daily then 8 drops every 2-3 days.

    How fast do you think the PO4 will decrease in our setup? Our RO/DI water tested great (0.01 on Colorimeter) so it has to be from our rock. We are not planning on adding any corals until at least after the first change out but will most likely be even later. For fish, we currently have a pair of pink skunk clowns and a large Sebae anenome in the tank. Only other livestock is a tiger pistol shrimp, 3 brittle/serpent stars, a few snails/hermits and possibly a high-fin goby. Planning on adding fish slowly to tank as well over a period of time.

    Any other suggestions/opinions are appreciated.

    Hi Tanglovers, it's nice to have electricity for our toys. :shoot7: Do check & maintain the parameters inline as per the guide, whether you have corals or not, as the evolving water composition is important for your corals later on. With no corals & detectable P04's, you dosing regimen is fine, although I recommend a flow rate of the zeo-filter be 200gph, with cycling on & off. It's tuff to tell you how long your nutrients will be detectable but you'll get there with the ZEOvit method Dose all the zeo's near the filter pump when "on". Dose Start2 1ml 2x's a day[2ml total]. Turn off your skimmer for 60min when dosing Bak/Food but this isn't necessary when just dosing Start2. Plz. repost this thread after the zeolite exchange, thnx. Bob

      Hi Bob -

      Thanks for the dosing info, forgot to post it but was planning on doing the 3 on 3 off for the reactor but would definetly overdosed on the start 2 if I did not post.

      Will keep you updated on how everything is.

      We are not planning on running the MH lighting until we get closer to adding corals, do you see any problems running/starting ZEOvit with only the supplemental actinic lighting?

      Thanks!

        TL, that will be fine, as the photo-periods will not affect the function of ZEOvit Bob

          Update on parameters and a few more questions:
          Started Zeovit supplement this evening. Water tested as such just prior to starting Zeovit today: Salinity=1.026, Temp=80, Phosphates=0.36 (Hanna), Ammonia=0.25, Nitrate=1ppm, Nitrite=0.025ppm, pH=8.1, KH=8.0, Ca=380, and Mg=1320.

          Questions:
          1.) I know the Ca and Mg both need to be increased but we have not yet set up the Shuran Ca reactor with MG granules, hopefully this will be on-line within the next couple weeks. Do we need to worry too much about this at this time since we have no corals in the system yet?

          2.) Do we need to worry about our KH and pH at the current levels? Do you forsee any problems with these levels as we add in the Ca reactor?

          3.) Was rereading the Zeoguide (again) and noticed it recommends daily dosing of Bac and Food for the first 2 weeks then decreasing to Twice weekly dosing of Bac and Food...do you recommend we con't with the daily dosing after the first 2 weeks or follow the Zeo guide rec of twice weekly?

          Any suggestions/ comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the help so far!!!!

            Hi TL, of course, parameters are not as critical without our corals Try to hand dose with supplements to have these inline before starting your Ca Rx.. My KH runs at 8 w/o any coral consequences & your pH will vary from time to time but it's fine.The zeo-dosing should follow the guide's schedule. Bob

              Update on parameters and first visual change with zeovit .

              Today is day 5 with dosing zeovit noticed small amt of brown discoloration to rocks and sand last night which has worsened overnight. I have also noticed development of hair algae (which I have never had a problem with prior to using zeo). Since I noticed these changes I did not dose with zeobac and zeofood today (had been doing 16 drops of both daily), but did dose twice daily with 1ml of start2 (this is the normal rec dose for my system). I have not recently added any further lighting to my system (MH's still off for now, just running 2 5 foot VHO actinics).

              Tested parameters tonight: Salinity=1.026, temp=79, phosphate=0.13, ammonia=0.25, nitrate=1, nitrite=0, kH=8.0, pH=8.0, Ca=390, Mg=1350. The only change I made after last dosing recommendations from Bob was adding 1 dose of Warner Marine Calcium supplement (this was added last night after the brown discoloration was already present) to help bring my Ca and Mg into optimal range.

              Based on the zeoguide it seems like an overdose of zeobac/ zeofood. I was wondering how long I should discontinue dosing these 2? Should I con't to dose start2 normally or decrease amt dosed? When I start dosing with zeofood/ zeobac should I use the normal dose (16 drops) again of decrease my dose? Just a reminder: total water volume is approx 210 gallons, using 2L of zeolites with 3 on 3 off cycle for the reactor.

              Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

              Thanks a bunch!!

                Hi TL, you will have the normal cycling growth of a new tank. Hold the zeo's for 2 days, then reduce the dosing quantites of Bak, Food7 & Start2 by 50%. My concern for your system is intank-flow--what are you using besides the wavebox? Bob

                  Bob,
                  Our intank flow is supplied by the Tunze wavebox, 4 Tunze 6100's with 7095 multicontroller, and surface flow provided by 2 Eheim 1262 return pumps. Will try to get pics of the aquascaping and placement of pumps/ etc later tonight/ tomorrow.

                  Thanks.

                      Update on Dosing please, just approaching 2nd change out

                      Alright, after a failed initial start-up with the Zeo system (we had a hard time remembering to dose). We restarted our dosing at the end of December. We are approaching our second change out (next week). We are currently dosing 1ml start2 twice daily, 8 drops of bac and food twice weekly, PIF 8 drops twice weekly, and 8 drops of AA's once daily. What recommendations for additional additives or changes in current dosing would you recommend at this time.
                      Here are our current tank parameters:
                      pH=8.2
                      KH=7.0
                      Calcium=390 We are having some issues with the CaRx at this time but dosed with 2 part calcium and magnesium supplement last night. Will recheck these values again later today.
                      Magnesium=1050
                      Ammonia=0.25
                      Nitrite=0.01
                      Nitrate=5
                      Phosphates=0.11
                      Salinity=1.025

                      Thanks for all your help,
                      Wendi

                        Hi Wendi, thnx. for the update. With new zeolites, dose the same quantity of Bak/Food7 but dose these only every other day for the 1st two wks. then 2x's/wk. If you are not having thick, brown biofilm on your panes daily, then also continue the same Start2 dosage. Wendi, try C-V[coral-vitalizer] at 12 drops daily & Fe[iron] at 4 drops 2x's/wk. Bob

                          Bob,

                          Thanks for the quick reply. Are you concerned about the very slow decrease/ still higher than normal phosphate levels at this point? I have been looking for an excuse to try the CV. Will get the CV and Fe ordered and on board shortly.

                          Thanks,
                          Wendi

                            Hi Wendi, I understand, & you can try dosing Start2 1ml 3x's/day if brown film deposits or slime deposits on your rocks is not troublesome. Keep us updated, thnx. Bob
