  • My new Tank plan

    Hi~ All

I plan to make new SPS tank in my new home (after wedding )
so I wanna write down history and questions about new tank in this thread..

I wanna make about 90g tank. tank will be cube shape and the size is not
    decided (80cmx80cmx55 or 80cmx70cmx55 LxWxH)

I wanna make shallow tank so I make my mind the height of tank is 55cm
    (about 22inch)

Most of equipment will be reused from current 100g tank.
    except return pump..

    1. Schuran 150 skimmer (will be changed BK250 internal )
    2. 3 6100 tunzestream with multi-controller
    3. Red Dragon 4.5m3 for return(currently Iwaki20RX)
    4. Schuran Pico CA reactor with PO4 reducer(made by scott.Thanks again )
    5. 1/4hp cooler
    6. Of course Zeovit reactor

with the size of tank, I do not decide the lighting system.
    Now I use AC14K 250 with 2 75watt VHO(60cm)....
    I am thinking of 2 VHO actinics03 and 2 T5bulb(60cm) for supplement
The problem is MH...There are so many bulb I wanna install..

    AC14,BLV10K,Radium20K,AB20K,Coralvue14K,AB10K is my thoght...
I should choose one or two bulbs..this is so difficult...
I wanna divide two side like Edward.Yellow redish SPS, and green purple blue
SPS.. I have yellow Table Acro, but In 20 or 14K, it looks like green...
(of course there is another reason to look like green..)

    I wanna have opinion about this...My experts...you!!
In spite of shallow tank, It is necessary to go 400watt for 20K? or 250w is
    OK?

In weekend I wil take a pic and upload here about the new space for Tank..

    Thanks...

Hi Vince, your 250's[do you plan 2?] should be more than enough--with 400's you may need a higher HP chiller. Are you using a sump? Why the change from your present tank? Sorry for more questions than answers Bob

      Thanks Bob...
Sure..I am using a sump and will be make sump...
and I am considering the sump relative to BK...
I heard BK is needed more than 25cm water depth..

The reason is the chnge from my present tank is....the tank is too long to
fit the new space...( ) and width is too short 55cm...
I wanna make long width and shallow tank.. That is the reason..

I heard that 20K 250w is not many PAR..I am very interested in Radium20K.
and BLV10K or XM10K with 2 75watt VHO is a little yellow to me...

People have also many recommandation and different taste so concensus
will be nothing..I think...It will be my one of difficult problem..

      Thanks again...

          About Overflow box..

I ask my friend to make durso stand pipe...I will make one overflow box..durso size is
not sure but it will be 1.25in or 1.5in

          About Return Pump...
I thought, thought, thought about the size of RD and decided the 4.5m3...
It will be small to your taste..but I have no plan to more than 100g in future and
think 3 tunzestream will solve the flow problem..

          I will use BB style...

In return pump, I will connect to chiller and inlet for CA reactor through T
          plumbing.
(this inlet is for in case of installing BK)
I am also thinking one outlet to mainpump..(RD->chiller->main tank)

Vince, my tank is 30 inches in ht and im using 250w with no problems. I would suggest tht you go with the 250w since it will save you $ on electricity for lighting up the 400w and also the chiller for colling down the water.

Are you using 20K 250watt? Can I put the SPS in bottom?

Im using 10k BLV 250w. If you dunt like the yellowness of the 10kk, maybe you can try the 14kk BLV since its pure white and with equivalent or higher PAR to the 10kk. If you want a more blue outlook, put in actinics t5 and you will have the best of both worlds - blue outlook with very high PAR

Also with 22inch ht, 250w will be more than enuff to place SPS at the bottom w/o issues IMO ..

                      Question about BB...

I plan to BB tank as current tank. In my current tank there is no cover stuff in bottom
(just glass) but NO problem.. I was thinking the board in my bottom.(starxxx? I can not remember)
but it is not easy get it in here and It is shallow tank and I do not plan to file the live rocks.
I am thinking of buying a little bit big live rock and use current several rocks.(one layer)
My concept is simple and clean...

Do I have to cover the bottom?

You dunt really need to cover the bottom with starboard or anything. Its just that the starboard will make the reef looks nicer and more 'natural'. Its completely ok to go without cover

                          I am still thinking RD4.5 or RD6.5

                          Is RD6.5 enough for 90gal?

I think the relationship between overflow hole size and the gph of return pump or
skimmer water flow... I will use durso type pipe and its size will be 1.25 or 1.5inches
Is it good or need larger size?

and If I use 6.5m, Should I have to divide out let pipe more than 2 to main tank?
or one outlet pipe is Ok?

                          sorry for many questions...

I am thinking aquascaping reef boulder...it is simple, neat and clean...

the concept of oriental....the beauty of blank space...

If I center boulder in 80cm cube, 2 MH are also necessary? or 1 MH is ok?

Which reflector will you be using? If its the LA3s then 1 would be enuff since it covers 90cmx90cm (3ftx3ft).

A DE reflector will effectively cover 60cmx60cm (2ftx2ft) only
