  • A.trimaculatus & SPS. Is it possible??

I know I may be chancing my luck but my LFS has a superb looking Apolemichthys trimaculatus (Threespot angelfish) in store at the moment. It is alert, no fin damage and it is eating. It is roughly 7-8cm big.

I was going to add a Regal Angel fish as my tanks show fish however Red Sea exports have been closed for the next 8-12mnths due to impact studies etc.

Now I would dearly love to add this fish to my SPS dominated reeftank. If I have to I will remove all LPS and softies into my propogation facility (The Regal Farm).

Question is, is it a wise idea? Should I give it bash? or should I consider another 'big' angel as a show fish?

    Thanks.

Curven, ask your LFS to place SPS's in with A.trimaculatus & come back the next day?? Really, a beautiful specimen though--let us know what you decide, Bob

Good idea Bob, thanks. Only problem, I think they run their fish systems at a slightly lower SG for QT purposes... will ring 'em today. heck, I'll even take a SPS frag of my own and see what happens

Just another question, many people refer to this angel as a blue face angel, right?

at this point, I think I might as well just give it a bash...

Give it a try, I have large angelfishes in my tank with SPS and I have no problem with them.

            Pomacanthus imperator
            Pomacanthus xanthometopon
            Pomacanthus asfur
            Pomacanthus navarchus

Curvball- that is not a blueface angel.... the blueface is a seperate fish....

i would take Bob's advice and see what happens.... its always a 50/50 chance....

Hi Bob, 180G, you helped me with the dosage of basic 4 in another thread.

Amount of ZeoVit in a Acropora/Angelfish tank?

I kept a flagfin for many years in a mixed reef and also in an sps dominant tank. He was the most well behaved fish in the tank, only picking lightly on brains and long zoanthid tentacles but he left the sps entirely alone. He also ate aiptasia and montipora nudibranchs.

Bob, I can't measure any changes with selifert, but I can see on my corals some small changes to the better. Soon it'll be time to change ZeoVit, I'll be back for new dose and maybe some picture.

Thanks so much for the feedback everybody, it is really appreciated... I don't know of any South African reefers keeping 'big' angels in their reeftanks, so with that in mind and everything I've read, I'm going to give the angel a bash, I do consider myself a bit of a risktaker in this hobby, heck I'm into my 2nd week of ZEO alreadt... but knowing my luck the angel will mow done everything in the tank, LOL. Will keep you all posted, off to the LFS tomorrow to go book 'em and will bring him home on the weekend.

                            Thanks again everybody.

Well, old Blue Lips is in my tank Picked him up on Friday and today he is already all over the tank I'm very happy with my choice... so far no picking on any corals, just a nip on my one favia... will keep everybody updated Also I should have a picture or two soon! This fish is the poster show fish, most beautiful fish I've ever owned... had to duck and roll outta the way of some rather envious reefers when I left the store, although they said my corals would be gone by the end of the weekend...
