  • Co2 Carry over filter

Hi everyone! I have bougt a Knop Co2 filter for my Schuran Pico CA reactor, the reason is that I want to reduce the possibilities of CO2 carry over to the tank. BUT ivé thougt a little about it an now I don´t now if it was that smart? Do you think that maybe the Zeo bak and the other additives will get stuck in the filter an form a "mini" Zeo reactor and ultimately be negative for my system?
    This is the filter:

Hi Niclas, no, you made the right choice, as the water flow thru the Ca Reactor is small, plus the Ca media does not function as zeolites. I do think the Schuran is efficent in preventing C02 dumping but your Knop degasser should be fine, Bob

Great! Thx Bob! I Also ordered a Hanna Phosphate meter, looking forward to see if that one can read anything, my Salifert test kit shows Zero Phosphate...I thougt about bying the Nitrate version also but most of you seem to concentrate on the Phosphates? I also want to know when I can/should start with Fluoride Iodine and iron?

In addition, wouldn't the ph be too low in the degassing chamber for the bacteria to survive? if they did, I certainly don't think it would thrive in that environment.

Niclas, you can begin AAHC now if you wish & after a zeolite cycle add PIF/Fe & the new coral-vitalizer, Bob

I´m already running AAHC, What exactly is one cycle, how long? Is it one month? I will also order the Coral-Vitalizer.

Niclas, a cycle is the time period until the zeolite is changed.

I would recommend you to follow the zeo cycles, described in the zeo guide.

Good thread! A degassing chamber is something I've been thinking about.
But need someone to explain a few things to me:-
I've never seen a degassing chamber, but as I understand it, it is simply another chamber with some more ca reactor media in it, so when the effluent runs through it, if it is still too acid ( too much Co2 ) it will dissolve some more media and raise PH. Am I right so far?
Then the 2nd thing, if the chamber reduces Co2, where does the Co2 actually go?

Wasp, you are dead-on with that description on what a 2nd chamber does. It will 'neutralize' the low Ph from the 1st chamber plus having an additional effect of further raising the CA/KH of the effluent. Resultant effluent from the 2nd chamber is higher in Ph/Ca/Kh when compared to the effulent from the 1st chamber. Its all good

                      OK, thanks Fkadir.

But what happens to the Co2?

When I talked to Hanna in Dec 2004 I was told the meter and reagents for Nitrate would NOT work in saltwater. I wish they would create one for saltwater, I've not tested Nitrates in over a year since I don't think I can read the results anyway.

IMO the Salifert or some other kits are fine for nitrate.

Bob if it goes into CaCo3, will this effect the balance between ca and alk coming out in the effluent? ( Sorry, I'm no chemist )
