  • Triton Test Results - High Barium - What could be the cause?

    Hi folks,

I received my Triton test results today for my tank, and alongside having a slightly elevated Lithium level, and zero Iodine! It came back with a high level of Barium.

Are there any products that contain notable concentrations of Barium?

When I performed the test I was dosing:

    ZEOstart3
    ZEObak
    Coral Snow Plus
    Sponge Power
    Coral Vitaliser
    Pohls Xtra
Amino Acids (only for a short time before the test)

I have since stopped all dosing bar Start3, Bak and Snow and the tank has completely turned around.

It's more of a curious question rather than 'I need an answer' as I'm just sticking to the bare essentials plus water changes until I see the need to add more potions.

    Thanks in advance
    Andy

Turned around in what way? Good or bad?

      In a good way.

I was suffering with burnt tips on all of my SPS when the Triton test was sent off - now the tank is looking good again with me stopping most of the additive doses.

I've read that the stones leach barium. Not sure if that has been tested and proven though.

Mine is at 404 ug/l, with the set point on the Triton test being 10 ug/l

Do you use any kind of phosphate absorber?

GFO is causing it. They also give you a guide and telling what could.be the cause and how.to lower it. Solution is aluminium based absorber.

I don't run any GFO media, never have done on the ZEOvit method.

None of them blue bottles burn tips or increase Barium
High levels of Barium are nothing to be concerned about and it's most likely it comes from your salt mix

                          Thanks Robbie

I think the issue with burnt tips comes from me having a big iodine deficiency - was just curious why Barium was so high as well. I use Reefers Best for my salt mixes.

                            Iodine deficiency will cause it????

From what I've read, I believe it can have an effect yes - especially as my level of it is zero - but then my ICP test showed that a lot of my trace elements are at zero, so it's very likely to be a combination of things, and I have a bit of work to do to sort the levels out.

The tank is back to being healthy, so it's just a curious investigation so that it doesn't happen again hopefully.
