  • Anemones, SPS and ZEOvit ?????

    Hi there guys

I would like to move one of my Anemone’s from my fuge’s into my small ZEO sps tank.

I have heard mixed opinions about sps and anemone’s, so I would like to get your thoughts on this please.

Also how do Anemone’s handle a ZEOvit system, as well as SPS tanks?

Your help and experience would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Christiaan

Christiaan, I have personally seen anemones (Phymanthus spp, Heteractis magnifica, Entacmea quadricolor) in zeovit tanks doing very well but it would be better do adopt them slow when they where kept over a longer period in a nutrient rich system. The main problem for the SPS is when they begin to move around in the tank or die (nettle poison).

Christiaan, I have H. magnifica in my ZEOvit SPS tank with no problems. I have had this specimen for almost 2 years and I have been running ZEOvit for just over a year now. As G. mentioned the problem stems from them moving around or dieing. Luckily for me, mine has never moved more than a couple inches from the spot I put it.

        Thanks for the feed back!

So what do you think, good idea, or bad?

I have a Red Bubble Tip Anemone since the beginning of my tank and the Anemone does not act any different than before it was on ZEOvit. I dont feed my anemone and have a glass shrimp in it that "supposedly" feeds it. I may feed it maybe once every 3 months. I dont want it to get big. Having SPS around it makes it not extend as much either.

I've got 2 haddoni and 3 BTAs in my Zeo mixed reef. I have a variety of acro, monti, and LPS species and have no issues. I've had the haddoni for about 8 months and the BTAs for close to a year. . .

Interesting thread... I'm curious about this too. I will be getting a S. Haddoni for my new tank soon, either blue or red variety. Anybody else got experiences with anemones & ZEOvit, good or bad?

I've got a BTA that I've had for several years, when I went zeovit he was OK for the first few months, then he went downhill, shrivelled a bit and lost a lot of color, went not totally bleached but very pale. At the same time the anemone was poorly there was little or no growth from the acros.
Anyhow I recently discovered I've been overdoing the start and running phosphate too low, so now I have a Hanna colorimeter I've let Po4 come up, and both the acros and the anemone have recovered totally. He is now his usual color and expanded heaps, I may have to cut him in 1/2 again.
It could all be coincidence, but I suspect that overdoing the start may be bad for anemones, or at least BTA's.

It's around 0.02, it goes a little higher at times, just removed a tang & found i now feed heaps less, so had to reduce start also to keep nutrients right. Still figuring exact dose by trial & error, the Hanna is great to enable me to do this.

                        Hey Chris,

My anemone has been doing pretty well, and I'm into my 2nd week of ZEO, although my PO4 is sitting at 2ppm still. i have a S.Haddoni carpet. So far so good... although I have lost 2 frags to RTN... damn nimb fingers when it comes to dosing... this stuff is sure volatile

Cerven, one should not lose any corals with ZEOvit per se, but during nutrient depletion it is critical that your parameters are inline with the guide recommendations especially the KH, which must be between 6-8--definitely no higher than 8--plz. check this daily for a time during this period of nutrient reduction, & maintain stability, Bob

Hey Bob... I checked my parameters and my KH is still too high! 11-12dKH
Will drop it slowly over the next few days... must I stop dosing ZEO while I do this? what is the best way to drop the dKH? Otherwise all other parameters are inline as per the ZEOguide.

Sorry, I know this off topic, but you started Bob...LOL

No problem, Cerven Turn-off the Ca Reactor, & hold the zeo-dosing. Maintain Ca, Mg & salinity by hand if necessary, allowing the KH to drop slowly. Then maintain parameters by daily adjustments to the CR until you are dialed-in, then restart the zeo's. Bob
