  • Vacation what to do?

Hey guys i am leaving the 9th of august for 1 week....

now i have my grandparents feeding the fish (they have done it before and do a good job)

and my girl friend's mom will be coming over once a day to change the pre filter on my mag pump and she said she could add the "chemicals" in her words if i would like....

now i would just have her throw in the start...

what do you think though? i dont want her to have to pump the stones, but is it a good idea to have her pump them when she comes over?

and what about the carbon, does she have to nead it??

    basically what do you think?

should i have her dose bak and food? or should i just skip that?

i will only miss one dosing of the bak and food7 i leave on a tuesday and will dose before i go and then i would just miss 1 more dosing of the bak and food7.....

so anyway give me your thoughts!

    thanks!

    Nick

Depends on how competent your GF's mum is, but i would keep it as simple as possible. Skip the food and bac since its only 1 dose but try to ask her if she can help you pump the stones and dose the start

No need to knead the carbon too IMHO. hth

IMO: no feeding, no dosing, no pumping, no kneading. Hands off will give your tank the best chances of survival. One week of not feeding or dosing is nothing, it might actually be good for your tank.

The only thing I let anyone do on my tank is make sure there is enough top-up water so the sump doesn't run dry. Other than that I leave the phone number of another aquarist for in case there's an emergency.

You might want to invest in an automatic feeder. . .it works great for me. I was just on vacation myself for a week. . .no Zeo dosing at all and everything was fine when I got back.

no offense, but have her do as little as possible. maybe feed the fish once or twice, but that's it. too many horror stories out there.

I know this is an old thread but I figured I would post for the next time you go on vac...

What I do when I go on vac is premix the food into those small glass bowls with lids and store them into the fridge... I take RO water and fill them about 1/2 full and then I place the liquid, frozen and flake food and anything else that I would normally do myself and place them into the bowls... I mix it up so each day is a little diff like one day is Mysis and the other is Brine and another is something else and so on... Just stack them in the fridge and have them pull from the top... As for anything else other then check on the tank a few times a day is possible, if they find something wrong they are to call me and I go from there...

If you don't want to deal with that and your fish will be fine on flakes, you can get some of those weekly pill containers that are divided into each day of the wk and place the amount of flakes into those so all I have to do it open up that days worth of food and dump it in, never have to worry about them messing up and overfeeding or anything...

Hope this helps anyone looking to go on vac next time... This is what I have done for years and never had an issue...

As soon as I read your post, I knew none of that would be a problem. Just leave it alone. Im sure your fish can also survive without eating for a week. One thing I did do before leaving on vacations was to do a nice water change.
