  • Which Thermostat to believe?

I just got my Pacific Coast Imports 1/2 hp chiller online. It has a built in temp controller. According to the chiller, tank temp is 78 degrees. According to the digital time and temp (3+ years old) tank is 82.3 degrees. I'm gonna be Teed off if that digital TnT is that far off. I was sweatin when tank reached 83.6. that is why I bought the chiller. But if the chiller is correct, tank never got over 81.6 degrees. Which of the 2 would you believe? I am leaning towards the chiller personally. I'm gonna try and find a way to verify what the temp actually is. Maybe next month I will spring for a Medusa 2 stage, just for insurance.

i had the same thing happen to me, i have a medusa dual stage controller and on of those wireless pinpoint thermoteres....

they are about 2 degrees off of eachother..

BEST thing i have bought is a actual therometer with that mecury in it...

    accurate to .01 degrees.....

i got it from the supplier of medusa controller for 25 bucks plus shipping...

all you have to say is that you got a cupon for the therometer ( just pretend you got a controller and you can save 20 bucks!)

anyway i can give you the number if you would like....

i have already broken 2 though so BECAREFUL with these things they break very easy, BUT are VERY accurate!

anyway let me know an i will give you the number...

ALSO you SHOULD get a controller! get the dual medusa like i mentions above, plug your chiller and heaters into it, and then you will NOT have a failure of the heaters or chiller!

plus there is an alarm on it to alert you if its 3 degrees above the set temp.

if you do get that controller make SURE you get that therometer because mine was calibrated alittle off at the fractory and you need to recalibrate it every year (says on the direction) but i do it every month for insurance...

hope this helps and let me know if you need that number!

Thanks Nick, I might go that way. Definitely going to get a controller. Currently TnT shows 84.5 degrees and chiller shows 80. somewhere in between lies the truth I imagine. I might just go to the lfs and pick up a glass floater until I get the controller, then I will get the one from Medusa. Thanks for the help.

Man with one thermometer knows the exact temp of his tank. Man with 2 thermometers has no idea what the actual temp is

Take a glass of water that is filled with ice and put one of the thermometers in that. It should read 32F. That way you call tell which one to believe.

Even that gets off target after a while. Trust me. good to do the frozen water test every year or two. I do it on my stuff once a year. You would be surprised how some temp reading drift over time.

Joe, I tested mine in a glass of ice cubes and water and got 36.2.. I was wondering could anybody out there with a glass thermometer try this and tell me what you get? I have a glass floater too and it corresponds to my medusa for the tank water " well it did I broke it". I just want to make sure before I do anything that a glass filled with water and ice should be 32... I would think it would be a few degrees higher because it is not frozen...
