  • New Tank Setup - Couple of Questions (Dosing)

    Hi All,

Well within the next couple weeks or so we are going to completely break down our 100 (72"x18"x20") gallon tank and reset it up using ZEOvit. The tank is not fully stocked and we want to switch to a shallow sandbed anyhow. We are going to use all new water, new southdown (rinsed in RO/DI water prior) and established rock about 100-150 lbs. There are no problems with the rock, never any problem algaes.

We are going to complete phase 1 with no fish or corals in the tank.

    1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) 110 gallons
    2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) 110 gallons after rock volume taken away
    3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique? Schuran JS1 w/ dosing pump.
    4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.) None
    5. Are you using Ozone None
    6. Are you using UV None
    7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume) Euro-Reef CS8-1
    8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels TBD
    9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels TBD
    10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.) None other then rock and ZEOvit Active Carbon
    11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.) 2x250 MH, 1x400 MH + 2x110 VHO actinic
    12. What corals do you keep SPS dominated with few LPS
    13. Tissue color (light or dark) No SPS yet
    14. How long has the tank been running Fresh Setup
    15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system Color and Polyp Extension
    16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.)
    17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.) 100-150 lbs 1-4 yrs old Never any Problems
    18. Any present problems Still detectable Phosphates and NO3/NO4
    19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.) Deep Sand Bed with Lots of Nutrients
    20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.) Salifert - 9 mos old
    21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.) Have Questions Below
    22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.) Chiller and Heater with medusa, 2x6100 Tunze Streams with 7094, 500 gph/return.

Dosing Questions/Want To make Sure we are correct for Phase 1:

Should we dose based on a 100 gallon system or does the additional 10 gallons of water volume matter that much? I know overdosing can be worse then underdosing. IE only 1 L ZEOliths instead of 1.1 L.

ZEObak - 2-4 drops/25 gal daily for 2 weeks then 1-2 drops/day till ZEOlith change. Is it better to start at the low, high or middle range for dosing?

ZEOfood - same dosing/question as above.

ZEOstart2 - Main Question. What is the recommended dose? The ZEOguide has ZEOstart1 and I know for established tanks the dose was adjusted.

Also, ZEOliths/Active Carbon are changed out at 4 weeks correct?

Also what is the recommended number of inches of fish for a 110 gallon tank?

    Thanks for your Help!

Hi Tanglovers, no tangs, huh? Go with 100g net vol, using 1ltr zeolite with a flow rate through the filter of 100gph. Be accurate on this. Cycle the stones "on" & "off" using 3hr. intervals. The first cycle on the zeolites is 4 wks., then it generally will always be 6wks. Use 1 Cup Carbon, passively in your sump, kneaded 3x's/wk & exchanged monthly. I'd recommend using the high dosages of phase1 since there are not any animals involved at first. If you develop thick, greenish to brownish film accumulates on your panes though, simply reduce those dosing quantities by 50%. Dose 1ml Start2 2x's/day[2ml total] daily. The # of fish is a personal preference, but if your goal is mostly colorful SPS, then less rather than more fish, will lessen your husbandry burden. Bob

      Hi Bob -

Thanks for your response. The ZEOstart2 dose is 1ml 2x a day for 100 gallons? No need for higher dose that is mentioned for the ZEOstart1 in the ZEOguide.

Also I have a Quiet One 1200 Pump for a Madison In sump Reactor and this seems like it will be too many gallons per hour...to get 100 gph we need 5' of head. I imagine the reactor would only equate to 1 or 2 feet of head which would make 275 gph or 225 gph. I got the Quiet One 1200 because it was recommended by Madison, but looks like this will be too much. What do you think? Does a reactor create more resistance then normal tubing making the flow lower?

Also anymore suggestions on fish numbers/inches would be appreciated.

      Thanks

Hi, doesn't the Quiet one have a reostat knob to regulate the flow rate? Otherwise a MJ-400 is all you would need. Start2 is much more concentrated than Start1, therefore, the variation in my guidelines. I probably would start with 2-3 fish, small to medium without the the tendency for growth over time. Bob

          Hi Bob -

Thanks for your help! I am sure more questions will arise once we get it all done so I am sure you will hear more from me.

          Thanks!

The Quiet One 1200 has a dial that allows you to reduce flow. That's a big reason why I like these pumps. Fully open at 0' head it's about 300 gph so I would turn it about half way closed.
