  • My Tank - dosing recomendations, thanks!

    Hi All,

Its great to see this forum. Zeovit at the moment in Australia is not widely accepted and when i post on our local forum pages i get flamed, so i have given up and joined this forum where i can talk about Zeovit openly.

Here is a run down on my tank as off last week (as posted on RC):-

    1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.)

    Approx 550L (137G)

    2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.)

    Approx 400-450L (100-112G)

    3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique

    Yes, Korallin C1501

    4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.)

    No

    5. Are you using Ozone

    No

    6. Are you using UV

    No

    7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume)

MY REEF CREATIONS MR2 - Twin Beckett - Rated 300G

    8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels

    PO4 - 0.03 (salifert) - NO3 - 0.5 (salifert) - both dropping still

    9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels

CA 425 / ALK 5.4 DKH!!!! / MG 1260 (all salifert). ALK has droped quite a bit since i lasted tested around 14 days ago. Have tweaked my CA reactor, should sort it out. Also CA levels have droped from 460 to the 425.

    10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.)

Live Rock only - Skimmer and zeovit

    11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.)

    6 hours a day - 2 x 150MH - Ushio 20K bulbs - 1 month old
    6 hours a day - 2 x 400MH - AB 13K bulbs - 1 month old

    12. What corals do you keep

    SPS

    13. Tissue color (light or dark)

Was very brown, but corals starting to lighten, some geting a blue sheen. Others going more green. After last rock change out, the corals went darker again.

    14. How long has the tank been running

    6 weeks

    15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system

Low nutrients and of course colourful corals.

    16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.)

    No

    17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.)

    53KG - 116LB's - 6 weeks old

    18. Any present problems

Some Acro's branches have bleached, started at base, not lost any whole species so far. Very rapid loss of tisue. Also brown smear algae on glass and power heads.

    19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.)

    As above

    20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.)

Salifert, all 6 weeks old and in date. Have ordered Hanna P04 colormeter.

    21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)

Have backed dosing back, but still geting algae? I have done first zeovit change out. Kept 10% of old rock in zeo filter. Flow rate through zeo filter approx 400L/HR / 100G/Hr (Eheim 1048). Just completed first 2 weeks of the new rocks, was dosing 2 drops of Zeofood / Bac and 0.5ML of Zeostart (every other day). Zeovit rocks 1L. Filter on 3 hours / off 3 hours etc etc etc. Rocks remained submerged.

So now i'm moving into the maintenance stage of Zeofood / Bac. Dosing twice a week. Do you think i should further reduce my dosing to 1 drop of zeofood and zeobac? Do you think the 0.5ML of Zeostart is OK?

Do you think i should dose 1 drop of zeofood / bac and 0.5ML every other day when i change out the rock in 2 weeks time?

    22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.)

Water temp steady at 26Min - 28Max (Aquamedic chiller). Salinity was 1.027, have brought it down to 1.026 and will further reduce to 1.025. Doing 5% NSW water change a week. Water of our coast in Australia is 1.028 (West Coast).

Now this week, the KH is now 7.4 DKH, Sainity 1.025, P04 0.05 and looks to be rising slowly, N03 - 1PPM (this has also increased by 100%).

The increases have happend since i have reduced dosing to 1 drop of bac/food (twice a week) and 0.25 ML of Zeo start evey other day. Tank is still getting algae (smear) on glass but now the corals don't seem as bright. I was thinking of uping the dose to 2 drops of bac/food (twice a week) and 5ML of start every other day.

My problems with bleeching only happend when i was doing 4 drops of bac/food every other day (after rock change out). It's strange as in this period some of the other corals looked really colourful (its got to be a thin line between love and hate)!

Your thoughts on the above will be much appreciated.

    Cheers
    Che

Hi, with your parameter issues[Salinity/KH] this can totally be the stressor on some corals that you've had trouble. I would ask you top monitor all parameters more closely & keep them stable or you will continue to experience difficulties with SPS. I'm not sure on long you've been on ZEOvit? Do you use Start? Is your zeo-filter flow correct? Do you interval the filter? Plz. answer these so we can give some relevant advice on the zeo-dosing. Thnx & welcome to our friendly forum. Bob

      Hi Bob,

This is week 7 on zeovit. I'm using the Zeovit reactor (internal) and flow through it is 100G/HR. Zeorock 1L. Filter is on for 3 hours then off for 3 hours etc etc. Stones remained submerged at all times

My dose last week was 1 drop bac, 1 drop food (twice a week) and 0.25ML of Zeostart every other day.

Intend on increasing these back upto 2 drops bac, 2 drops food (twice a week) and 0.5ML of zeostart every other day.

Yep, KH may have been the problem with the bleeching, my calcium reactor played up and i did not relise it. As for salinity, i am using NSW from the coast here in Australia and i'm getting readings of 1.028. I have now brought it down in my tank to 1.025.

      Cheers

Hi Che, thnx. for the further information on your system. It's a fact that some corals are hardier than others, but plz. keep your parameters stable for long-term successI recommend the following for your system. Let's assume it's time for your first zeolite [email protected]/h is fine. 1)Dose one Cup carbon, passively, kneaded every other day 2) dose bak/food7--3drops/3drops daily for the 1st 2wks, then 2x's/wk. 3) dose Start .5ml daily, split into 2 doses of .25ml. each. You should again begin to see nutrient reduction as long as fish-feedings are prudent. Your Beckett skimmer will need to be maintained frequently[clean backett's & riser tube] to keep it efficient but this can be a very good skimmer for your system. Ask any questions if necessary. Bob

          Hi Bob,

          Thanks for your input,

I'm due to change out my rocks (second time) this weekend (week8).

So you are saying dose bak / food - 3 drops / 3 drops for first 14 days and then after 14 days 3 drop / 3 drops (twice a week). Also 0.5ML of Zeostart daily.

I thought the guidelines read 0.5ML of start every other day and after rock change out dose bak / food every other day (not daily).

Please can you confirm, many thanks.

          Cheers
          Che

Yes Che with the 1st zeolite change-out, bak/food7 are dosed every other day for the 1st 2wks not daily as in the initial beginning of ZEOvit, then 2x's/wk. The zeolite exchange interval for SPS color will be ~6wks hereafter. Start effects on the bacteria[carbon source] is enhanced with daily dosing, done multiple X's. For example, if one's daily Start dose is 1ml, then dosing .5ml 2x's/day is recommended, or better still .3ml 3x's/day Bob

              Your a champ Bob,

Thanks for the info. Will give the 3 drops / x2 a week a go. Also will dose 0.5ML to my tank daily (0.25ML twice a day).

Last 3 question if i may, do i need to turn the skimmer off when dosing start?

Also i did my first zeovit change out on week 4, I was planning on changing the rocks out again this weekend (this will be my second week 4). Is this OK or should i wait for another 2 weeks (being week 6) before i change again?

Also how much rock should i leave in the reactor, 10% of the old stones.

              Cheers
              Che

Hi Che, after the 1st change-out of the zeolites, one can extend the interval to 6wks, as less nutrients should abound than before starting ZEOvit. It is not necessary to turn off your skimmer when dosing Start. I can seed the new zeolites with 5-10% old stones, placed on the bottom of the zeo-filterBob
