  • bob. i've got some brown spots... pls advice

    tank : 800 litres
    zeovit for 1 week

    dosage
    lith: 1.5litres
start: 2ml twice a day every other day
bak: 4 drops twice a day every other day
food: 4 drops twice a day every other day
    reactor feed: 3hrs on/off

seems like i'm in line with the dosage for my tank.
however, i do notice some brown spots on the glass. it could be due to Si in my tap water was i used tap water with conditioner. TDS on Tap Water is 47ppm.

shd i be worried? or shd i hold dosage for a while?

    thanx a lot

Hi planetg, yes, your product water is a problem, as hi TDS or Si's with ZEOvit results in diatomaceous accumulates within your system. One really needs RODI product water for the diatoms to diminish. Your dosage of Start is a little high even at your stage. Plz. reduce Start to 1ml 2x's/day[total 2ml, instead of 4ml daily]. Your other doses are fine. Bob

47ppm is quite a high TDS to have in your source water. As Bob said you should look into getting a RO/DI unit.

      Or a bigger algae scraper

thanx bob and orion for your inputs.

i've just gotten back from biz trip and observed my tank for the first time since embarking on zeovit.

here are some observations. i see specks of tiny hair algae + some diatoms on the rocks. my readings are as follows.

        CA : 360 (salifert)
        KH: 6dkh (salifert)
        MG: 1350 (salifert)
        NO3: undetectable
        PO4: 0.25ppm

i'll be setting up my Calcium Reactor tomorrow and throw in a little bag of RowaCarbon tomorrow as I didn't have time to set them up b4 i left.

will be getting a booster pump for my RODI too.

i shd be continuing on bob's recommended dosage? shd i add some phospate remover like rowaphos?

        cheers

47 is extremely low, but high to put in your tank I mean.

            Over here it's 200

I think planetg's problem is partly caused by his new tank which is still under going the nitrogen-cycle and old liverocks.

The brown spots are caused by the silicates and PO4 in the tap water.
The LRs are still leaching nutrients and this can be explained by the PO4 readings of 0.25ppm, if a hanna PO4 meter is used, it could show even higher readings.

47ppm TDS for his tap water is pretty low, I had mine at ard 65-66ppm but 0ppm after RO/DI.

Quick work harder and get your RO booster pump.

If the tank is new then it is quite possible for your LR to be leaching some PO4, it takes a few months for these to be exhausted.

                        keigo,

i'm still waiting (running out of patience) for my CR to arrive. I'm setting up another temporary equipment. how sad is my life! all my SPS have browned out in my holding tub and i do hope they will colour back.

yup. our water is supposed to be cleaner here but i'm not abt to give TDS any chance, damn it!!!! haha

                        orion,

you might be right abt the PO4 leaching. i'm patient and waiting for things to stabilise. fully confident of zeovit's prowess!

                          bob, pls comment

updates on my parameters. my readings are as follows.

                          CA : 410 (salifert)
                          KH: 6.7 dkh (salifert)
                          MG: 1250 (salifert)
                          NO3: undetectable
                          PO4: 0.03ppm

forgot to mention i started the tank on tap water and conditioners. TDS of my tap water is 47.

since 1 wk ago, top up and little water change is with RODI water now.

however, i still notice a large chunk of brown algae. no other algae spotted. i'm attributing the brown algae on the rocks to several factors

                          1. new rocks
                          2. Si in Tap water

started full dosage on 20th May with 80ml/12 drops/12 drops (start/bak/food)
dosage of zeovit is now 8ml/12 drops/12 drops (start/bak/food)

i guess i'll just need to be patient and hang on to see the brown algae die-off?

Hi Planetg, thnx. for the update, however, your previous water source will be problematic for the near future. Also, your ZeoStart dosage maybe contributing to the diamaceous growth. Try 1ml Start 2x's/day, or better still, .7ml 3x's/day. Bob

                              bob,

kindly elaborate what u meant by diamaceous growth?

I'll start with 1ml twice a day. I assume i can return to 4ml twice a day when the algae dies off?

                              cheers
