  • Anyone keeping carnation corals with zeo?

A friend said he would be really impressed with zeovit if someone was able to keep carnation corals using it, so I thought I'd ask

Current Tank: 75g sps restarted with ZEOvit August 2004, Aqua Connect 14K 250W SE MH x 2, SLS HQI ballasts, 54W blueplus T5s x 2, H&S A150 external (recirculating) skimmer, Tunze Stream 6060, 6000 with single controller, Geo Ca reactor, in-sump ZEOvit reactor from Madison, Aquacontroller

Tom, interesting question, that maybe Alexander can lent his feedback from others that may have tried with ZEOvit. My guess is that while ZEOvit will provide our waters nutrient-poor, the mulm is not sufficient as a food source for this extremely difficult-to-keep species.Bob

                    try it invinc!

remember that carnations also require special flow and such

                      Greetings All !

Welcome to the Land of the "Nepthea" Beasties ... sometimes I find it extremely difficult to distinguish amongst them.

With the caveat that this stuff is a little dated (from Sprung and Delbeek's The Reef Aquarium, Volume 2, 1997) ...

                      Dendronepthea spp.

                      Non-photosynthetic.

"Aquarium Care: Mysteriously difficult to keep. Not recommended to beginners. It is beneficial to hang colonies upside down from ledges ... . It is possible that these corals feed on the abundant mucus in the water of a coral reef. This food source traps bacteria and phytoplankton, and attracts zooplankton. ... get their nutrition from phytoplankton, therefore they may need phytoplankton daily in order to grow and thrive. ... May require certain trace elements. ... Feed at night. The use of a pipette for feeding the polyps directly is helpful. The authors are experimenting with a food source that duplicates the mucus and trapped bacteria/phytoplankton, which may be the real food "package" that these corals need. In addition, Peter Wilkens showed us that detritous stirred up from the bottom substrate by churning it with a glass rod provides a food source readily accepted by many non-photosynthetic corals. This detritous is nutritious and also has bacteria, protozoans, crustaceans, and other microorganisms attached" (P. 221).
                      Also ...

Perhaps the most critical parameter in keeping these corals is water flow. Water flow not only carries food to the coral, but the correct type and rate of flow will encourage the coral to open and will improve its feeding efficiency" (P. 221).

Any of this sound vaguely familiar, folks? ... hehe ...

There is no future ... only the past repeating itself in the now ...

                        Greetings All !

                        BTW ... similar genera include:

                        Nephthea (Photosynthetic)
                        Scleronephthea (Non-Photosynthetic)

                            Thanks Gary

I expect, without giving it a try, additional food for those corals is necessary.
