  • red algae with bubbles

I just started zeovit about 24 days ago. I have 250 gal net 2 liters zeoliths 200 gph 8 drops bak 6 drops food everyday for the first two weeks now 2x's a week(food was 8 but reduced by 2 due to aa dosing), 1 ml start 3 times a day, aalps 2.5 ml 2x's a week aahc 5 drops 2x's a week. I have had a problem w/ red slime algae in two specific areas on my gravel. I did not think it was zeo related since it was there before I started zeo. When I started the algae seemed to break free and float to the surface which it never did before so I thought zeo was working. But now it 's spreading even onto some zoos on the gravel. Should I stop dosing and for how long or should I alter my dosing or anything else I 'm not thinking of?
    Thanks

Hi RJF, your zeo-doses are good, but we can do a little adjustment with your total zeo-regimen to help erradicate the cyano

    1) Stop all zeo-supplements, ie. AAHC/AALPS until this clears[~6wks]

    2) Dose Bak 12 drops, 2x's/wk.

    3) Dose Food7 12 drops 2x's/wk. Turn off the skimmer for 60 min, after bak/food doses.
    4) Dose Start1 or Start2[perferred] .5ml 3x's/day daily.
    5) In 1 wk., change the zeolites, & increase the quantity to 2 1/2ltrs. at a flow rate of 250g/h. Pump clean 3-4 x's/day, 5 reps each time. Continue to interval the zeo-filter.
    6) No new livestock additions for the next 6wks. Optimize fish-feedings. Be sure your product water is low TDS/Si's. Bob

Thanks Bob I have start2 so I'll reduce my dosing of this. What do you mean by interval the filter(pump stones?) My tds is zero how do you measure silicates? I do have alot of fish about 25 I feed twice a day and algae magnet of 3 types of gracilara everday I feel I need to work on lessing my frozen feedings. I think mesocosm had it right when he said about 3 times day consumed in 1 minute.

Bob do you think The increased dosing of bak and food and the decrease in start2 will have ant negative effects on my corals( tissue darkening/recession ). Also why the decrease in start2 I thought that would slow down nitrate and phos reduction. Also phos of water is 0 salifert double strength, nitrate is 0 lamotte, but it's about 1-2.5 with an old salifert no3 test kit. I'm going to test my ro water, water change water for these and see what that is. Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion, cycling the zeo-filter "on" & "off" at 3hr. intervals allows a faster nutrient reduction. Cyano is bacteria, not algae, & bak/food7 along with some Start2[full strength] will dominate the former given adequate current. To be sure, darkening of your corals is a sign of zeo-excess, so be on the alert for this visual cue. Definitely reduce the frozen food feedings & obtain a TDS tester & Si test & add a DI canister to your RO unit if this is not already on board, so you confident in your product water. Bob

Bob When you say start 2 full strength do you mean for phase1 .6ml 2x's a day per 100 gal. That's 3 ml per day anyway you want to distribute it. Tank is 250 net. You told me to lower my quantity from 1 ml 3 times a day to .5 ml 3 times a day. Doing this would lower the dose in half now you say full strength which one is it? Ro water is tds 0 nitrate 0 phos 0 and I have a di to. What 's a good si test kit to go with?
            Thanks Bob

Hi Bob, Start2 is more effective & concentrated than Start1, yet w/o the dreaded TN consequence in excess, therefore, the lower dose is needed in conjunction with the higher doses of bak/food that I recommend for your situation. Bak/food in higher %'s are needed to over-ride[starve] the cyanobacteria in your system. Salifert's Si test is easy to use & reliable. Bob

I forgot, How long should I dose like this until the bacteria disappears and should I go back to my original dosing regime after it's gone or about six weeks.

Bob, this new dosage should be used for ~ 6wks., then one can revert back to your original dosage, or post up at that time for zeo-dosing, which time the cyano should be decimatedBob

cmc5dc, are you having issues with Cyano? If so, mind creating a new thread for it so we can diagnose it better?
