  • Posted this on RC under ggjeff's thread, heres what I think.

I am earning my degree in Marketing at San Jose State currently and here is my take on the situation.

If I was Captive Oceans and I was advertising on Reef Central I would want all the word of mouth publicity I could get, I don't care if people are talking about skimmers with zeo, lighting with zeo, uv sterilizers with zeo, etc. The point consumers are talking about zeo, the very product you are advertising on Reef Central in hopes that people will learn about it, take an interest in it, and eventually buy your product.

Companies spend into the millions of dollars advertising in hopes of recieveing the best kind of advertising possible, word of mouth advertising. Word of mouth advertising far exeeds any other form of advertising because consumers are excited about your product and are willing to share their excitement with other potential consumers, potential consumers hearing from other normal everyday people about how good a product is, sells a lot of that product because one, it is first hand experience and two consumers trust other consumers because they are not trying to sell the product, only talking about how it worked for them. Captive Oceans had achieved this with this forum and people were excited and enjoyed talking about the zeo product line with non-zeo users. (potential customers)

Once ReefCentral stepped in this all stopped. The forum is dead, ReefCentral has lost loyal customers, zeo users now use zeovit.com thus negating the advertising that Captive Oceans did here on RC. If I was Captive Oceans I would feel that my money from this point on has gone to waste. They are no longer reaching a core of their target market (previous users) and since the previous users are on zeovit.com new users are less likely to take in interest in Captive Oceans on their own without some previous consumers telling them their first hand experience.

A true loss for both RC and Captive Oceans, if I were Captive Oceans I would be highly upset.

Captive Oceans has not lost. Most people who are buying ZEOvit in the U.S. are those who are seeing ZEOvit tanks in person. Most of them dont even frequent RC. Like I had a couple people visit my house and now they are using ZEOvit.. they never heard of it before either. It seems like RC brought down ZEOvit to a certain level and were caged in our own forum. Other RC members are so against ZEOvit even though they never seen or touched it. There was truly no point in those frustrating wars. Dont worry, people will know where to go and we will see new faces here soon. Dont feel that its a loss to Captice Oceans.

I just feel that it is a loss to Captive Oceans because if they truly didn't gain anything from advertising on RC then they wouldn't waste their money advertising there in the first place.
If I were Captive Oceans I would be upset. It would be like me owning a car dealership and advertising next to the freeway. Then one day the city decides without warning me that cars are no longer allowed to use the freeway. My advertising money has gone to waste because people are no longer seeing my sign.

I have 5 people on ZEO that have never heard of RC and I will keep it that way. Gary has not lost anything; there is still a buzz on RC. We have over 95 people signed up here in less then 4 days.. To me that is a WIN for sure, I a forum for bodybuilding it took me 18 months to get 3000 members, to get over 100 in less then a week is huge with Forums. Forums are a totally different monster then day to day advertising. We have paying sponsors at my board that don’t need TV/Mags/Etc I have 2 sponsors that make well over $8 million a year in supplements off word of mouth and sponsoring 2 boards. I know what you talking about but we are in a totally different arena that what you deal with.. This is all MO.

I always thought their claims of people "hyping" Zeovit were overblown. If they are so worried about that, why don't they go after the Euroreef zealots with the same intensity? Check out any post about skimmers, and 10 people will be on there posting about how great their Euroreef is within 5 minutes. Mention Zeovit in a thread and they treat you like the guys that hand out flowers at the airport.

Another thing to think about is other countries...

i was reading the Singapore threads and they went through the same drama RC and German boards went through about ZEOvit... NOW.. the ZEOusers has increased there. Just because there are heated discussions about ZEOvit doesnt mean that its dying away.. its the opposite when you look at stats instead of people just blowing steam.

Brad, great post, i see it the same way,

one thing tho, i never cared for if anybody would buy zeo or not, what upsets me is, as soon a zeo user posted on RC so many jumped all over them, that is what upsets me, any zeo user should be able to post on RC just like anybody els without starting a arguing thread,

I thought it was the same way as well (with RC now a ghost town) until I talked with Gary and then Brian at Finsreef and the both told me that most of thier clients dont frequent RC and had seen other peoples tanks or seen it in magazines, etc. I guess we are the only reef and computer geeks using zeo

I sell Zeo by customers coming into my store and seeing the improvement it has made on my tank. I have had such great success that I am setting all my coral systems up with it. I have had a retail for the last ten years, and have been around for many of the new products, and tested most of them. When any new product comes out, there is always naysayers, but results speak for themselves.
I have no doubt that Zeo is what it says it is. Most people seem to think that Internet is the industry, when in fact I would say that it is only ~10%(and in truth, probably much less).
When I first started sell the EcoSystems, it went thru the same because the of the MUD, but I can also send over pictures of several Kick A$$ system run on the original concept.
Hang in there guys, things will improve with time.
We are on the forefront of this.

For those of you that might not have been around when the Captive Oceans forum was created on RC you might not know or remember that Gary basically did that for "us". He wanted to provide a place where we could all share ideas experiences and discuss this system. Sure he did get advertising out of it too but knowing Gary the way I do, his main objective was giving to the users. Now we have this great forum and once again Gary is to thank. (plus all the minions that set it up)
