  • raising mg

I've been having trouble raising my mg. I run mg granulate and my mg is 1230 I tried to raise it with esv mag but it doesn't seem to work ie. it raises a little then drops down to where it was. I was wondering what would be a good way to raise it? What product is good? I'm concerned about adding to much chlorine/ chloramines or what ever the additives are loaded with.
    Thanks

How much do you have in your reactor? 10-15% should be good.. Also what salt brand are you using.. If you are doing frequent water changes and using a good salt Mg levels should be better also.. I used Kents Liquid Mg additive to get it up and I use Mg granualte also and never have a probelm with Mg.. I use oceanic and my Mg runs around 1400-1450 usually.. If anything I wish I could get this lower around 1350.. I am going to do the 70-30% Oceanic to TM pro like Bob to try and get my Mg and Ca levels better then with Oceanic alone...

I have 10-15% in the reactor but I use reef crystals and I'm weary about swithching. I'll test my next batch and see what the parameters are. I remember I tested it before and it was right on but that was a while ago...

If you're having trouble keeping your Mg up, then check your salinity levels. I would aim for 1.024-25. I used Kent Mg to increase my Mg level. I only add Mg when I do water changes. Make sure your water change is also 1350-1400. If you do water changes that are lower, then this could lower your Mg too.

My salinity is about 1.0241. I will check all parameters of my make up water(reef crystals) and report back.

Not sure of Reef crystals Mg level.. I would like to know if you go do a full test on RC.. CA, Alk, Mg, salinity and at what temp when you test the water please...

I'll mix up some in a few days since I just did a water change.

in the epsom salt for maising mg thread someone said the mg in rc is 1000 but that doesn't sound right to me way to low I'll check it out.

If I switch I'm gonna do 70%oceanic 30%tm, maybe it will be time. Is there something I can do to make the switch as easy and less stressful as possible.

It might not be to low. You said you have used additives and also Mg granulate in your reactor.. Maybe its trying to get there but its so low it can't. Then when you use additives and the corals are using it up and you do a water change you put new water in with a very low Mg so you are back to sqaure one.. I would PM Bob about making to switch and do as he recommends.. I have not got the tm pro yet so I have not made the 70-30 switch yet.. I did switch from IO to Oceanic though and I did that 25% first week then 50% next water change and so on.. Thats how I did it not saying thats right but it worked for me...

                            Peace, Jeff

RJF, I switched by using my current salt[in your case Reef Crystals]: Oceanic:50%:50% & gradually titrate the % of Oceanic to the point the parameters are inline, eg. Ca-440/Mg-1300/KH-7-8, salinity-1.024-5. Bob
