  • A. Nobilis STN

Had an A. Nobilis which was doing fantastic. It seems to be STN from the base and only underneath the lower branches. All polyps are fully extended. All paramaters are good. Any ideas?????

Hi, STN, generally, can be from many causes, eg. swings in parameters, even wks. before the event occurred, deficient flow &/or light around the affected coral, rapid changes in salt or carbon brands, & nutrients, ie, P04 removers, overshooting ZEOvit, & parasitic infestation, just to mention a few.
Do you use ZEOvit method? If so for how long? Plz. give your net vol./ your zeo-dosing including quantity of zeolites, flow thru your zeo-filter, quantity of carbon & how you use it. Have you recently changed the carbon brand, the amount or how you operate it within your reef? Plz. give us your quantities of bak/food/Start & frequancy of their doses. Thnx. Bob

Hi, ZeoBak/ZeoFood can be absorbed by our corals as a food source. Adding higher quantities can cause corals to darken or cause basal tissue lost. This is also true of PIF or any trace element in excess, or low KH[change in]. If your yellow corals are becoming greenish, then assuming stable parameters, this is from too much PIF &/or bak/food, or a recent increase in P04's. I would recommend not dosing PIF for 1 wk, then decrease to once/wk. Food7 should be dosed equally with Bak quantity. Also remember, that not all corals adapt, & A.nobilis is especially difficult in this regard. Bob

Going to start zeostart 2 this week(hopefully). I will reduce the food dosage and was going to go with 20000K bulbs. Too many changes at once??

Hi, on your lighting, if your old bulbs were > 6mos. you might use your photo-adaptation techniques. Your other changes will be of no concernBob

              Hi,
Old bulbs are 7 mos. old. Was kind of worried about the spectrum.
The stn problem is odd. It seems like it had stopped , but is progressing (albeit slowly) again.
