  • Zeovit rock Changeout question

I'm going to change out the rocks soon. I was wondering if it is safe to just dump the old rocks out into the sump. I was just going to pull the handle on the reactor and let them all tumble out and then dump new rocks in. Will the old ones start leaching stuff back into the tank?

Not sure why you would want to do this though? They would just be another place to trap detritus...

Hi Tom, some old zeolites are fine, but as Jeff mentioned, too many will create decreased flow/detritus in this area w/o active zeolite benefits.
I always use a few "old" stones from the last batch to seed the new ones more quickly. Bob

Thanks! Since I'm changing out 2 litres for my 200 gallons of water volume, then I'll keep about 1/4 litre of old stones in there for seeding. I'll just throw away the rest of the old ones. I thought they would just perform like live rock in the sump.

Tommy, I use maybe 5-6 stones to seed my 2 liters. I do use the older stones for frag plugs.. they work awesome and cover in coralline algea very fast...
