So I head downstairs this morning to check on the tank before I head to work. I get to the top of the stairs and I immediately know something is not right. As I go down the stairs, the smell of death gets thicker and thicker. I hit the lights and walk into the utility room where the frag tank is - sure enough all but two of my hard corals are dead. I lost just about everything.

Still not sure why - I didn't have time this morning to run tests on the tank, so it could be anything. Last night, everything looked great. Did my dosing - 3 drops bak, three drops food and a drop of start1 and a drop of AAHC. Added my b-ionic and MG as well as my top off water.

This just really sucks, I have this stabbing sharp pain in the pit of my stomach. In a way I am glad I had to get to work - damage has been done, now I can try and let it pass so I can make a rational decision on how to proceed from here. It's not like I had huge colonies of beautiful corals that took years to raise. I had maybe two dozen of various common frags that were just starting out. I was finally starting to see some good colors and growth.

It's just so frustrating to see all that work go down the drain. And also to think that you know what you are doing and when it becomes painfully obvious that you really don't.

until I do some testing I really don't know. I tested everything before I started to move everthing over - ammonia, nitrites, nitrates were all zero. No phosphates, calc = 420, dkh 7.5, spec grav - 1.025 MG = 1240 (a little low), temp at 78 degrees. The zeo reactor was/is running at about 70 gph. Skimmer was churning some nasty wet stuff.

              THIS JUST REALLY SUCKS!!!!

Matt, what are you using as a heater? Also do you run it on a controller? I had a heater malfunction about 7-8 yrs ago on a tank.. I always use a controller now and never worry about that happening again...

Sorry to hear that Matt. Hang in there bro, I lost over 6 colonies last year due to overdosing start1. Let me know if you need anything.

If its brand new I would REALLY suspect that.. What did u use to check the temp of the water after dialing in the new heateer? I have seen heaters off more then 10 degrees before....

when I pulled the skeletons out this morning - the water temp felt fine - of course I could have been in a state of shock and not really noticed anything wrong.

Peel and stick on the glass thermometeres? Yea the temp could have def been off. I am not saying that is def the case but very coincidental since its a new heater. I always use a controller these days and never worry about that happening.. I would def look into a controller for you heater chiller applications in the future...

Unless the water felt really cold or really hot, I'm going to doubt a heater malfunction. I had one and I knew it was the heater...

I'm going to put my money on either a ZEO overdose or perhaps outside chems.
