  • About aiptasia

I found 5 aiptasia in my tank...

and I heard the peppermint shrimp could reduce it but some said it does not
work...some people said it could happen to war between cleaner shrimp and
peppermint...( I have a cleaner shrimp)

Yesterday. I read a thread about aiptasia in my korea reefclub and heard
there is named "elimi-aiptas" from Tropic Marine.and worked well...
He said if I shot it to aiptasia,it will melt easily and no harm to coral, invert and fish..

    Do you use this? elimi-aiptas?

Yeah there's a couple similar products out, they require you to took off all flow and let it sit on the anem for an hour or so.

I've never heard of peppermints fighting skunks. I known people who keep quite a few of both..

We have a product here called Joe's Juice that kills them. I've never used it though. I always do the non nature friendly "rent-a-shrimp". The Caribean peppermints do a good job but don't seem to last much more than a few months in my tanks. I think maybe a temp issue with them.

              Thanks Steve..

Temp issue means our tank is colder than Caribean? or opposite?

Actually, the best treatment I've found is super-concentrated kalkwasser, made with a tsp of kalk and 50ml of hot water, injected with a syringe (I use the Salifert kit ones); a single batch of that will take care of 5-10 aiptasia. Actually, I think that's what "Joes Juice" is (no slur intended on the product). If you can't inject, you can squirt it on the aiptasia and it will ingest, but I've had better luck with the kalk injection method. Once you're set up with a syringe-full, squirt a tiny bit near the aiptasia to stun it, then pierce the disk and inject.

Very easy, works well. However, if you have tons of them (not just 5), it's likely you won't be able to get them all this way. In that case, I have a butterflyfish that wiped out hundreds of them in about 2 weeks. I love that fish.

                    Hi, Kim...

Kalk drips in zeo is a no-no, but minimal kalk injections like this to kill aiptasia I've never had a problem with...

Turn as much circulation off as you can when blasting them.

                          Greetings All !

Joe's Juice is an excellent product. After squirting it onto an open Aiptasia, you get to watch the Aiptasia immediately begin to melt ... very satisfying ...

                          ... :shoot7:

No need to stop pumps, no injection nonsense, no difficult to obtain and expensive Aiptasia eating nudibranchs (... although Berghia verrucicornis is VERY effective as an Aiptasia predator ... when its not being eaten by a large Aiptasia, or getting sucked into an intake ...), and no problems with the excess Joe's Juice coming into contact with coral specimens. One problem I've experienced with it is the reoccurance of Aiptasia a few weeks after a Joe's Juice dosing. It turns out that Aiptasia reproduces asexually by a process called pedal laceration. The cells of an Aiptasia's foot can regenerate into individual organisms. There sometimes remain viable cells after a Joe's Juice treatment which may regenerate into more Aiptasia ... the addition of a few peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) to clean up any remaining tissue, and to consume any new baby Aiptasia works really well for me.

The only downside to the Peppermint shrimp is that: (A) sometimes they prove ineffective because they prefer other available food to the Aiptasia they're supposed to be eating, and, (B) occassionally I'll add one that enjoys eating ALL kinds of polyps, including mushrooms. Very irritating ...

You can order Joe's Juice online at:
                          http://www.joesjuice.com

BTW, there are two excellent ... IMO ... articles in Coral Magazine on "Aiptasia in the Reef Aquarium." Part one (December/January 2005 issue) deals with mechanical and chemical ways to deal with Aiptasia, and Part two (February/March 2005 issue) deals with biological controls of Aiptasia.

                          JMO ... HTH ...

Yesterday I started to kill Aiptasia with kalk.
I was ready boiling water+kalk and used syringe (from salifert test kit).
                            I found 10 aiptasia (found 5 more )
and started to shot to them...

                            Wow... :shoot2: :axe:

the result is so great. I can not find any Aiptasia right now..
but I will be watching them...

                            Thanks guys...

                              Toldja.

Have fun aiptasia-hunting...knock them down as soon as you see them. I didn't, and eventually had to get a CBB...which wiped them out in a matter of weeks, so it's always an option. My fields of aiptasia disappeared.
