  • Is Flow Relative?

I know this has to sound like a stupid question, but is flow for SPS relative to the size of the tank?

I mean, if you have a 100g and you push 2000gph over your SPS and you put that same SPS in a 10g and use 200gph, is it the same thing or is there a need for more flow?

I think relatively speaking it would be the same.

Seriously though I have no idea.

it goes by GPH and where the flow gets to in the tank you dont want dead spots and you want at least 10x turn over ratio i have a 56x turn over ratio in my 125 and im lookin to put another tunze in it

thats interesting....kinda like the "watts per gallon" rule.
8 wpg on a ten gallon tank is still 80 watts...
20x turnover on a ten gallon tank is still 200gph...

i would think flow is relative, since in a smaller tank, a PH doesnt need to push water that far...but i guess it depends on a lot of things...

        i dont know either.

Yeah same type of concept but l;ike WPG is not the whole pic just a part of it PAR is a bigger part of Lighting and the GPH isnt everything theres wheres the flows getting to and not getting too

There are other things that are much more important than GPH.

What's important is that the flow is random, turbulent and chaotic. It is also very important that there is sufficient flow in all parts of the tank, incl. behind and under your rock work.

In case of a 10g nano I wouldn't over think it though, just start with a couple of powerheads and if it's not enough add more

fwiw a pump that puts out 200gph will barely move any water and since you'll need more than one source of water flow you'll probably end up with much more than 200gph.
