  • drying sand out

want to start keeping hard corals mostly sps and as a result there are a lot of upgrades that i need to make. I want to go low nutrient (or as low as I can) and eventually try zeovit . I am getting my lighting and flow sorted and am now thinking about creating a faux sandbed in the main tank. The sand in my sump has not become a functioning dsb mainly (i guess) because i kept my large eheim going to maintain some sort of biological filtration whilst the dsb kicked in. I would like to get rid of the top layer (dirty?) and dry the rest out to use on the faux bed. Is this possible? Was thinking maybe whack it in the oven for a few hours........what do you reckon?
Will i be able to clean the sand to a certain extent?

Worst comes to worst i can buy new. just think it would be a waste.

    Cheers

    Hi Juppy,
The only concern with your sand is that it will in some cases get phosphate attached to it, which can be released later. Baking in an oven not likely to give effective results here.
However, the zeovit system will gradually work it's way through these nutrients, if they exist, so you could safely use the sand.
Worst case it would take a little longer for your nutrients to come right down.

I would throw it out and get new. I would not want to take the chance. If you do keep it, it’s going to take a bit longer for ZEO to get out all the nutrients.

Go with new if cost is a problem, don’t use any and go with Starboard, but it may cost more then new sand, not sure over there in the UK.

is there a home depot in the UK???
Proud owner of an Elegance Coral "that lived". (It is thriving whith long tentacle tips...purchased in January 2005.) It has white tentacle tips, I beleive this has something to do with ones that will typically live due to the collection site.
