  • Whats start2?

I'm sure its been meantioned a few times, I see its for sale, whats the deal with start2??

Hi Kifffo, Thomas is always brewing & Start2 is the newest of the product line. It's composition is not just a "watered down" version of Start1 but contains many different elements from it's predecessor, without the tissue-recession with excess dosing It will be used in the same fashion as Start1. So instead of using Start(1) we can replace it with Start(2)?

Madison, I think I need to order some things soon!

Brad, Start2 should be available stateside very soon

Ken, Start2 will eventually replace Start1. If you're system is doing well on Start1, there is no need to discontinue it's use, but Start1 will not longer be available after it is replaced with the new product. Start2 will also be dosed differently in quantity than Start1, in other words, there will be a conversion dosing ratio factor of 1/3 that of Start1 quantity. Bob

              Greetings All !

Madison allowed me to pay homage to his first bottle of ZeoStart2 last week ... he's been using it in his tank for a few days now ... looking forward to his report on it ... He promises availability "soon."

BTW, get psyched for the smell shift ... from acetic acid to an ester/"ester-like" fragrance.

              Madison,
The BK is pulling out about 60% of what the 8' RK2 is doing ... whatever you tweaked, it was right.

                Greetings All !

And today's uninvited chemistry babble is ... you guessed it ... esters.

                From:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ester

Esters are usually encountered as sweet smelling organic compounds commonly produced by many plants and fruits. However, the most common esters found in nature are fats and vegetable oils, which are esters of glycerol and fatty acids.

In organic chemistry and biochemistry esters are substances that have the functional group (R´-COOR") (the carbon is double-bonded to one oxygen atom and single-bonded to another) and consist of an alkane united with the residue of any oxygen acid, organic or inorganic. An ester is a product of the reaction of an acid (usually organic) and an alcohol (the hydrogen of the acid R-COOH is replaced by an alkyl group R"). Esters mainly result from the condensation (this is, a reaction that produces water) of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. The process is called esterification. This reaction can be catalysed by the presence of H+ ions. Sulphuric acid is often used as a catalyst for this reaction. The name ester is derived from the German Essig-Aether, an old name for acetic acid ethyl ester (ethyl acetate).
                And ...

Esters can participate in hydrogen bonds as hydrogen-bond acceptors, but cannot act as hydrogen-bond donors, unlike their parent alcohols. This ability to participate in hydrogen bonding makes them more water soluble than their parent hydrocarbons. But the limitations on their hydrogen bonding also make them more hydrophobic than either their parent alcohols or parent acids. Their lack of hydrogen bond donating ability means that they cannot form hydrogen bonds between ester molecules, which makes them generally more volatile than an carboxylic acid of similar molecular weight. This property makes them very useful in organic analytical chemistry. Unknown organic acids with low volatility can often be esterified into a volatile ester which can then be analysed using gas chromatography, gas liquid chromatography, or mass spectrometry.

Many esters have distinctive odors, which has led to their widespread use as artificial flavorings and fragrances. For example:

                methyl butanoate smells of pineapple
methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) smells of the ointments called Germolene™ and Ralgex™ in the UK
                methyl benzoate smells of marzipan
                ethyl methanoate smells of raspberry
                ethyl butanoate smells of pineapple
                pentyl ethanoate smells of banana
                pentyl pentanoate smells of apple
pentyl butanoate smells of pear or apricot
                octyl ethanoate smells of orange
Esters may undergo hydrolysis - the breakdown of an ester by water. Esters may also be decomposed by strong acids or bases into an alcohol and a carboxylic acid or a salt of carboxylic acid.
The above link also has structural pictures and many tangential topic links.

FYI ... sorry ... had to be done ...

BTW ... for those who got mind-numbed by chemistry class flashbacks ... focus on this: "...The name ester is derived from the German Essig-Aether, an old name for acetic acid ethyl ester (ethyl acetate)." Sound familiar? ... hehe ...

Just trying to fill in the data set ... hehe ...

Thanks Bob, I usualy get my fix a month or so ahead of time so I don't run out. The timing will be perfect.

mesocosm, you don't fool me. The ester wabbit comes next month and doesn't smell anything like that!

The only thing I can gather is the size of my sytem, bioload, and that I am well into phase three. I just cannotg dose it in a small enough quantity.
