  • All BK Owners please look.....

    Hey guys,

I would like to ask all the BK owners a couple questions to get a better feel for how much skimmate i should be expecting.

    1. What size BK do you have and on what size tank?

    2. Is you bioload, low, medium, or high in your opinion?

    3 Internal or External

4 Are you skimming 'wet' or 'dry'

5 How much skimmate do you get in 1 day? I mean how full is the cup, ie. 1/2 way full, 1/3 way full, or you could measure the amount of skimmate out, like 1 cup, 2 cups, and so on.....

6 How often do you clean your collection cup/neck?

I want to figure out if i am running my skimmer too 'wet', i mean i have to empty the collection cup about every 1 1/2 days to 2 days or it will overflow... Its a 300 internal and i am just wondering based on other peoples experiences if i should tune my BK to skim alittle more 'dry'....

So i would like to get some feed back from other BK owners and base my decesion off some first hand experience.

    thanks guys....

Nick, I am still "tweeking" mine and set it to skim pretty wet right now. I have 340 net gallons, a 300 internal with a light/moderate bio load. I am taking out ~2 qts every day. It is pretty light colored, weak tea. I have also been blowing and scrubbing my LR every day to get rid of the brown plating algae. I will aim for strong tea/weak coffee when I get ready to settle it into maintenance mode.

      1. What size BK do you have and on what size tank?

BK 400ext on a 450g tank with say 100 in the sump

      2. Is you bioload, low, medium, or high in your opinion?

      my fish load is excessive

      3 Internal or External

      external

4 Are you skimming 'wet' or 'dry'

      pretty dry actually

5 How much skimmate do you get in 1 day? I mean how full is the cup, ie. 1/2 way full, 1/3 way full, or you could measure the amount of skimmate out, like 1 cup, 2 cups, and so on.....

I have no idea. I have it plumbed to a drain

6 How often do you clean your collection cup/neck?

never. I turn the thing super wet for a little while, let the foam wash the neck and lid. I spray some of my water change water through the cup to clean the cup

            1. What size BK do you have and on what size tank?

            BK300 on a 400 gallon tank

            2. Is you bioload, low, medium, or high in your opinion?

            low

            3 Internal or External

            internal

4 Are you skimming 'wet' or 'dry'

As wet as possible, I pull out enough water for the replacement water to suffice as my water change schedule

5 How much skimmate do you get in 1 day? I mean how full is the cup, ie. 1/2 way full, 1/3 way full, or you could measure the amount of skimmate out, like 1 cup, 2 cups, and so on.....

Varies from day to day, at least 1/4th at the most completely full

6 How often do you clean your collection cup/neck?

Daily or every other day, I try to run it in a way so that no sludge builds up inside the neck but I always rinse it when I empty the cup

One thing I noticed with mine Nick, If possible, have the water in the sump at about 9". I raised mine from 7" and noticed a marked improvement in skimming.

                          Thanks Marshal,

It's about 8.5-9" right now, i set it so the skimmate isnt so clear like weak tea. I set it so its like medium to dark tea, still 'wet' but not as wet as i was running.
