  • Back Plate on Red Dragons

Quick question - I sold my BK300Ext and the buyer noticed something that I never did. On the back of the RD, there is no plate - only a kind of smooth green surface. There are threaded screwholes though. I never noticed it because it all came attached - and the thing is so damn pretty you never look at the back. But he noticed it because I took it apart.

I looked back at some old pix and noticed it has been like that all along. Obviously it doesn't affect performance, just wondering if this is normal? In this pic you can see the back panel, but you can only see that it doesn't match if you blow up the pix.

    Thanks!

I noticed mine after about two months. At the time I PM'd someone that just got one and they said no back plate as well. I stopped looking for it in the 220g sump full of LR.

When it comes time to clean the pump the back plate is not desirable. The back plate on most pumps are not water tight and the cleaning solution gets inside and is difficult to get out. Most though snap into place and are not screwed in. I guess if it had screws it would be OK but just an added and unnecessary step.

LOL Steve, I can just see you digging thru all your LR.

I guess its just as well, the top plate on the Eheims isn't watertight either, just cosmetic. I'm planning on a Red Dragon for my sump return on my new tank, do you know if the back plates are just missing from the skimmers, or all Red Dragons?

I think they all come without the back plate.

All come without 'em. I have 3 RD 12s, a small RD and the skimmer RD and they all are "back plateless".
          10x3x2 FOWLR (for now)
          BK400ext
RD12 return, 2 RD12 closed loop, wavebox with extension

I will have to use some Rio parts to retrofit a cover for the RD and sell it for $$$ .

Pierce you're gonna be too busy changing diapers to do anything except stare at your BK and drool.

Not to mention, if your dog's like mine, you'll have to deal with doggy depression when the baby arrives.

I only have diaper duty from 7-11pm M-F, weekend hours are more flexible  .

Bonnie is dealing with the baby very well, she runs to him when he makes the slightest noise and won't let stranger (to her) go close to his cribe.
