  • Here she is. BK 300 internal (pics)

Thanks to Scott and Madison, my replacement skimmer has landed. Very well packed and in perfect condition.

Tres Generacions and skimmate, my two favorite things.

Side by side with Euroreef 12-2

And 2 minutes after firing it up.

I have some surging/vibration through the pump that makes the water level fluctuate by 1/2" or so. Not sure what is causing this and I will let it run and see what happens.

For those that are curious, the nozzle is set with the black dots lined up and the riser tube was closed far enough to bring the water level to the bottom of the collection cup.

Anyway, thanks again Captive Oceans et al.

Is the outlet pipe above sump water level?

Nice skimmer... I have it's older sister.

Thanks guys. Yes Jeff, the outlet pipe is angled so that about 3/4" is above the water level. It is not in its permanent location yet so for now it will be fine.

          Very Nice Marshal!!!!

I'm glad it made it to you safely.

About the pump: How deep is the water in the sump? Is there a few inches of water volume above the inlet for the pump? If it's low, then that could cause the surge. If so, can you raise the water level any?

Also, make sure there is nothing obstructing the water path (packing paper, peanuts, etc) in the pump and in the plumbing.

Or, it might just be something that clears itself out overnight.

Also check the nozzle on the pump and make sure it's in "position #1". Screw the nozzle in all the way, then back it out until the black dots align. If it's in too far that can cause the surge as well.

Madison, the water level in the sump is just over 7 inches about 2 inches above the nozzle. I can't see any kind of vortech, but I will raise the level some and see if it helps. I'm hesitant, because when the power goes out, I only have an inch or two from overflowing. I haven't looked into the nozzle yet. I will check that also. It ran fine for a couple minutes then started the surging thing. I thought maybe it was sucking in the larger bubbles from the fuge tank and cavitating, I turned the skimmer away but no change. The nozzle is in the number 1 position. If I turn it nearly completely out, the surging will go away.

give it about 3 weeks to break in and find the "sweet" spot.... then you will be amazed!

It seems to have settled somewhat at this point. I will take a closer look at the air tubing for possible kinks and other things.

I know the skimmer is new, how is it performing compared to your euroreef 12-2 , regarding noise ,workmanship, and bubble formation. thanks

Emperada, there is no comparison in craftsmanship. The BK is built like a tank, excellent machine work and dead silent. As far as bubble production, the bubbles are VERY fine and consistant. I ran 3 of the Sedra 5000's on the ER and didn't get this kind of bubble production. I understand that these skimmers need at least 2 weeks, usually 3 of break in. So I will reserve my opinion on performance for a while. First impression is that it will do very well.

And... If you look in the comparison picture, that is about a weeks worth of skimmate in the cup. A little darker than I usually run it but nasty nonetheless.

After I get the ER cleaned up, it will be for sale, VERY reasonabley priced as well.

I'm surprised at the size comparison between the two. They don't look a lot different. Most pics I've seen the BK always dwarfs the other skimmer but I don't think I've ever seen that size ER.

This should be a good comparison since both are hugh by my standards.

The only thing that sticks out as being considerably different is the riser neck diameter on the ER is pretty small. It takes a lot of air to get a foam head to the top of the BK's large neck.
