  • BK went nuts last night

I was really odd. Shortly after I fed my fish last night I noticed an unusual amount of foam in the bottom of the the collection cup. There was a 2" tall foam head in the bottom of the cup sitting on top of the liquid. There wasn't much liquid because I cleaned the cup just the day before.

A few minutes later the cup was completely flooded and the foam was being pushed out of the vent holes in the cup lid. Some water flooded out through the lid too. Thank goodness I was in the room as I pulled the plug on the skimmer before too much of a flood occurred.

When I restarted the skimmer, the bubbles rose up to the top of the riser tube very quickly. I adjusted the telescoping puts down and restarted it. I kept doing this until I had lowered the pipes as low as they would go. It didn't overflow from that position, but it was close.

This morning the level in the skimmer has dropped down to where there isn't even any foam in the riser. I'll have to readjust it back to the normal setting tonight when I get home.

    Any ideas what caused this?

Anyone else ever have this happen before?

I was surprised because the one thing that has always impressed me with the BK was the fact that it is always consistent in the water height.

The only thing at all that I did that was in any way out of the norm was that fed 2 cubes of frozen mysis shrimp. Feeding 1 cube never has had any noticeable effect on the skimmer. I can't see 2 cubes making it go completely bonkers.

    Ideas?

You forgot to say your prayers to the skimmer Gods before you went to bed

    It just happens sometimes

I've never had it happen since I set up the BK 300 in March 05.

Did the foam density in the body look normal? If not look for an obstruction in the air intake which would mean the RD will be pulling less air and therefore pushing more water. That will = overflow at your normal settings. I don't run the silencer since noise doesn't matter in my situation so couple times a week I submerge the air intake tube briefly to clear out an build up that might be occurring.

No, the foam density wasn't normal. The bubble were larger and much more turbulent.

I did partially block the air intake at the silencer, just to see how it would effect the skimmer. Reducing the air actually lowered the water column in the skimmer.

It's back to working normally now.

That's weird. I'm glad I was home and prevented a flood.
